The Chapter of Kaṇikāra Flowers 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Kaṇikārapupphiya 1. Seeing a blooming Kaṇikāra, I then plucked it; And offered it to Tissa, the steadfast one who had crossed the flood. 2. Ninety-two aeons ago, when I offered that flower; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 3. Thirty-five aeons ago, I was known as Aruṇapāṇī; Endowed with seven treasures, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 4. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Minelapupphiya 5. The Fortunate One, golden-hued, radiant with a hundred rays; Engaged in walking meditation, with a mind of loving-kindness, like a lordly peacock. 6. With a clear and joyful mind, having worshipped the supreme knowledge; Taking a Minela flower, I offered it to the Buddha. 7. Thirty-one aeons ago, when I honored with that flower; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 8. In the twenty-ninth aeon, named Sumegaghana; Endowed with seven treasures, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 9. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Kiṅkaṇipupphiya 10. Like a golden mountain peak, the Omniscient, leader of the world; Taking water from a pond, the leader of the world bathed. 11. Taking a Kiṅkaṇi flower, I offered it to Vipassī; With an uplifted and joyful mind, to the steadfast lord of bipeds. 12. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I offered that flower; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 13. In the twenty-seventh aeon, there was a king named Bhīmaratha; Endowed with seven treasures, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. Habbalo. 14. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kiṅkaṇipupphiya spoke these verses. The Third Apadāna of the Elder Kiṅkaṇipupphiya. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Taraṇiya 15. But the Blessed One, the Seer of the Goal, Lord of bipeds, bull among men; Surrounded by disciples, Approached the bank of the Ganges. 16. The Ganges was full to the brim, drinkable by crows, difficult to cross; I helped the community of monks cross, and the Buddha, the supreme biped. 17. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of crossing. 18. Thirteen hundred aeons from then, I was five universal monarchs; Endowed with the seven jewels, powerful wheel-turning monarchs. 19. And in this last existence, I was born in a brahmin family; Together with three companions, I went forth in the Teacher's dispensation. 20. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Taraṇiya spoke these verses. The Fourth Apadāna of the Elder Taraṇiya. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Nigguṇḍipupphiya 21. Of the Blessed One Vipassī, I was a gardener; Taking a Nigguṇḍi flower, I offered it to the Buddha. 22. Ninety-one aeons ago, the flower I worshipped with; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 23. Twenty-five aeons from then, I was one lord of men; Named Mahāpatāpa, a powerful wheel-turning monarch. 24. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Nigguṇḍipupphiya spoke these verses. The Fifth Apadāna of the Elder Nigguṇḍipupphiya. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Udakadāyaka 25. Seeing a monk eating, with a clear and tranquil mind; Taking water in a pot, I gave it to Siddhattha. 26. I am pure today, stainless, with doubts destroyed. When a being is born, a result is born for me. 27. "Ninety-four aeons ago, I gave water then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of water. 28. "Sixty-one aeons ago, there was one Vimalo; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 29. "The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Udakadāyaka spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna: The Elder Udakadāyaka. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Salalamāliya 30. "Shining like a Kanikāra tree, seated in a mountain cave; illuminating all directions, Siddhattha, the charioteer of men. 31. "Making my bow unerring, then stringing an arrow; I cut a flower with its stem, and offered it to the Buddha. 32. "Ninety-four aeons ago, that flower I offered; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 33. "Fifty-one aeons ago, I was one Jutindharo; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 34. "The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Salalamāliya spoke these verses. The Seventh Apadāna: The Elder Salalamāliya. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Koraṇḍapupphiya 35. "Having seen the trodden footprint, adorned with the marks of a wheel; following footprint after footprint, of Vipassī, the great sage. 36. "Having seen a blooming Koraṇḍa, it was worshipped by me with its root; delighted with a delighted mind, I bowed to the supreme footprint. 37. "Ninety-one aeons ago, that flower I worshipped; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 38. "In the fifty-seventh aeon, I was one Vītamalo; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 39. "The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Koraṇḍapupphiya spoke these verses. thus he spoke. The eighth Apadāna of Thera Koraṇḍapupphiya. 9. The Apadāna of Thera Ādhāradāyaka 40. A support was given by me, to Sikhi, the kinsman of the world. I bear all the earth, this entire world. 41. My defilements are burnt, all existences are uprooted. I bear my final body, in the Dispensation of the Perfectly Enlightened One. 42. Twenty-seven aeons ago from here, there were four people. Named Samantavaraṇa, mighty Wheel-turning monarchs. 43. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on) ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Ādhāradāyaka spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of Thera Ādhāradāyaka. 10. The Apadāna of Thera Pāpanivāriya 44. To the Blessed Tissa, the god of gods, the imperturbable one; A single parasol was given by me, with a mind utterly clear. 45. My evil is covered, the attainment of wholesome states. They hold a parasol in the sky, this is the fruit of former kamma. 46. My last existence rolls on, all existences are uprooted. I bear my final body, in the Dispensation of the Perfectly Enlightened One. 47. Ninety-two aeons ago from here, when I gave the parasol then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the parasol-gift. 48. In the seventy-second aeon, there stood rulers of men; Named Mahānidāna, Wheel-turning monarchs. 49. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on) ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Pāpanivāriya spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of Thera Pāpanivāriya. The twenty-first chapter, Kaṇikārapupphiya. Its summary – Kaṇikāra, Minela, Kiṅkaṇi, and Taraṇa; Nigguṇḍipupphī, Dakada, Salala, and Kuraṇḍaka; Ādhāraka, Pāpavārī, forty-eight verses.
