19. The Kuṭaja Flower Chapter 1. The Legend of Elder Kuṭajapupphiya 1. The Perfectly Awakened One, golden-hued, like the risen sun with a hundred rays; Looking around in the direction, going swiftly like the wind. 2. Seeing the Kuṭaja in bloom, widespread and thickly covered; Having plucked it from the tree, I offered it to Phussa. 3. Ninety-two aeons ago from now, when I offered that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 4. Seventeen aeons ago from now, there were three well-bloomed ones; Endowed with seven treasures, mighty Wheel-turning monarchs. 5. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kuṭajapupphiya spoke these verses. The first, the legend of Elder Kuṭajapupphiya. 2. The Legend of Elder Bandhujīvaka 6. The Perfectly Awakened One named Siddhattha, self-born, praised by the good; He, having attained concentration, sat in a mountain cave. 7. Searching in the lotus pond, for the excellent water-born flower; Bandhujīvaka flowers, I saw immediately. 8. Taking them with both hands, I approached the Great Sage; With a clear mind, joyful, I offered them to Siddhattha. 9. Ninety-four aeons ago from now, when I offered that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 10. Fourteen aeons ago from now, I was one lord of men; Named Samuddakappa, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 11. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Bandhujīvaka spoke these verses. The second, the legend of Elder Bandhujīvaka. 3. The Legend of Elder Koṭumbariya 12. Shining like a Kaṇikāra tree, seated in a mountain cave; Like the immeasurable ocean, like the widespread earth. 13. Worshipped by the host of devas, like a noble bull; Joyful, with a joyful mind, I approached the supreme man. . 14. Taking seven flowers, mixed with wild fig, I offered them to the Buddha, Sikhī, the Kinsman of the World. 15. Thirty-one aeons ago, when I offered those flowers, I have not known a bad destination; this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 16. Twenty aeons ago from now, there was a great and powerful wheel-turning monarch, named Mahānelasa. 17. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Elder Koṭumbariya spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of the Elder Koṭumbariya. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Pañcahatthiya 18. The Blessed One, named Tissa, foremost in the world, chief of men, surrounded by disciples, was walking on the road. 19. Five lotus flowers, were placed by me in four directions; desiring to make an offering, I took them for the accomplishment of my vow. 20. The golden-hued Fully Enlightened One, walking through the marketplace, I, pervaded by the Buddha’s rays, worshipped the best of bipeds. 21. Ninety-two aeons ago from now, when I worshipped those flowers, I have not known a bad destination; this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 22. Thirteen aeons ago from now, there were five powerful wheel-turning monarchs, endowed with the seven treasures, esteemed as excellent. 23. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Elder Pañcahatthiya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Pañcahatthiya. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Isimuggadāyaka 24. Like the rising sun with a hundred rays, like the radiant sun with yellow rays, like a shining chief, the leader Padumuttara. 25. Having ground wild beans, in pure honey, standing in a palace, I gave it to the Kinsman of the World. 26. Eight hundred thousand were the Buddha’s disciples; all filling the bowl, and even more than that. 27. By that clarity of mind, impelled by that root of merit; For a hundred thousand aeons, I did not fall into a bad destination. 28. In forty thousand and thirty-eight aeons, they were named Isimugga, powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 29. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Isimuggadāyaka spoke these verses. The Aapadāna of the Elder Isimuggadāyaka, the fifth. 6. The Aapadāna of the Elder Bodhiupaṭṭhāka 30. In the city of Rammavatī, I was a drum-beater; I was constantly engaged in attendance, I went to the supreme Bodhi (tree). 31. Attending morning and evening, impelled by that root of merit; For eighteen hundred aeons, I did not fall into a bad destination. 32. In fifteen hundred aeons from now, I was a lord of people; named Muraja by name, a powerful Wheel-turning monarch. 33. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Bodhiupaṭṭhāka spoke these verses. The Aapadāna of the Elder Bodhiupaṭṭhāka, the sixth. 7. The Aapadāna of the Elder Ekacintika 34. When a deity from the host of gods, passes away at the end of their lifespan; Three sounds issue forth, for the gods to rejoice. 35. "Go from here, sir, to a good destination, to the companionship of humans; Having become human, in the true Dhamma, gain unsurpassed faith. 36. May that faith of yours be firmly established, rooted and well-founded; Unwavering throughout life, in the well-proclaimed true Dhamma. 37. Having done good by body, much good by speech; Having done good by mind, non-harming, without substratum. 38. Then, having made much merit with substratum through giving; Settle other mortals too in the true Dhamma, in the holy life." 39. With this compassion, the gods (address) the god when Oh, the wise ones! They rejoice at the passing, "Come, O deva, again and again!" 40. "Then I was agitated, when the assembly of devas gathered; What kind of birth, will I go to, having passed away from here?" 41. "Knowing my agitation, a monk with developed faculties; Desiring to uplift me, came to my presence." 42. "Sumana by name, a disciple of Padumuttara; Having taught the meaning and the Dhamma, he agitated me then." 43. "Hearing his words, I gladdened my mind in the Buddha; Having saluted that steadfast one, I passed away there." 44. "I was reborn right there, prompted by a wholesome root; For a hundred thousand kappas, I did not fall into a bad destination." 45. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Ekacintika spoke these verses. The seventh, the Apadāna of the Elder Ekacintika. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Tikaṇṇipupphiya 46. "Being a deva, surrounded by nymphs; Recalling my past deed, I remembered the best of Buddhas." 47. "Taking a Tikaṇṇi flower, I gladdened my mind; I offered it to the Buddha, Vipassī, the bull among men." 48. "Ninety-one kappas ago, when I honored with that flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship." 49. "In the seventy-third kappa, there were four supreme kings; Endowed with seven treasures, wheel-turning monarchs of great power." 50. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Tikaṇṇipupphiya spoke these verses. The eighth, the Apadāna of the Elder Tikaṇṇipupphiya. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekacāriya 51. "Among the Tāvatiṃsa devas, there was then a great cry; 'The Buddha has attained Nibbāna in the world, and we are still full of passion!'" 52. "For those who were agitated, afflicted with the dart of sorrow; With great strength..." With firm resolve, I went to the Buddha's presence. 53. Having taken a Mandārava flower, and fashioned a garland; At the time of the Parinibbāna, I offered it to the Buddha. 54. All the devas rejoiced, and the nymphs with me then; For a hundred thousand aeons, I did not fall into a bad destination. 55. In the sixtieth thousand aeon, from here, sixteen people; Named Mahāmalla people, were powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 56. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been fulfilled. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Ekacāriya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Ekacāriya, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Tivaṇṭipupphiya 57. Overcome, they all gathered, and looked at me; As they were looking, a burning sensation arose. 58. Named Sunanda by name, a disciple of the Buddha then; Of the sage Dhammadassī, came to my presence. 59. Those who were connected to me, they gave me flowers then; I, having taken those flowers, offered them to the disciples. 60. I, having died there, was reborn again; For eighteen hundred aeons, I did not go to a state of woe. 61. From here, thirteen hundred aeons ago, there were Dhūmaketū; Endowed with the seven jewels, powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 62. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been fulfilled. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Tivaṇṭipupphiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Tivaṇṭipupphiya, the tenth. The chapter of Kuṭajapupphiya, the nineteenth. Its summary – Kuṭaja and Bandhujīvī, Koṭumbarika and Hatthiyo; Isimugga and Bodhi, Ekacintī and Tikaṇṇika; Ekacārī and Tivaṇṭi, sixty-two verses are recounted.
