Chapter on Supāricariya 1. The Apadāna of Elder Supāricariya 1. Paduma by name, Lord of bipeds, bull among men; Emerging from the forest, The Seer taught the Dhamma. 2. There was an assembly of yakkhas, Not far from the Great Seer; Having arrived for some purpose, They immediately looked on. 3. Understanding the Buddha's words, And the teaching of the Deathless; With a serene and joyful mind, I clapped my hands and attended. 4. See the fruit of good practice, Of attending the Teacher; For thirty thousand aeons, I have not fallen into a bad destination. 5. In the twenty-ninth hundred aeon, Named Samalaṅkata; Endowed with seven treasures, A powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 6. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Supāricariya spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Elder Supāricariya. 2. The Apadāna of Elder Kaṇaverapupphiya 7. The Blessed One named Siddhattha, Foremost in the world, bull among men; Preceded by his disciples, Approached the city. 8. I was in the king's inner palace, A trusted guard; Seated in the palace, I saw the world's leader. 9. Taking oleander flowers, I scattered them over the Sangha of monks; Having set aside for the Buddha separately, I scattered even more. 10. In the ninety-fourth aeon, When I offered flowers; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 11. In the eighty-seventh aeon, There were four mighty ones; Endowed with seven treasures, Powerful Wheel-turning Monarchs. 12. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kaṇaverapupphiya spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Elder Kaṇaverapupphiya. 3. The Apadāna of Elder Khajjakadāyaka 13. To the Blessed One Tissa, Formerly I gave fruit; And coconut I was a giver of snacks, a consecrated snack. 14. Having given that to the Buddha, to the great sage Tissa; I rejoiced, desiring what I wished, I was reborn wherever I desired. 15. Ninety-two aeons ago, when I gave that gift; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of fruit. 16. Thirteen aeons ago from now, there was a king like Indra; Endowed with seven treasures, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 17. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha's teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Khajjakadāyaka Thera spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Khajjakadāyaka Thera, the third. 4. The Apadāna of Desapūjaka Thera 18. The Fortunate One, Atthadassī, foremost of the world, a bull among men; Having risen into the air, he went through the sky. 19. The place where the Teacher stood, where the great sage rose; That place I honored, with my own hands, with faith. 20. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, when I saw the great sage; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of honoring the place. 21. Eleven hundred aeons ago, one named Gosujāta; Endowed with seven treasures, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 22. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha's teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Desapūjaka Thera spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Desapūjaka Thera, the fourth. 5. The Apadāna of Kaṇikārachattiya Thera 23. The Fully Awakened One named Vessabhū, foremost of the world, a bull among men; For a day's abiding, the sage entered a great forest. 24. Having gathered kaṇikāra flowers, and made a parasol then; Having made a flower covering, I offered it to the Buddha. 25. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, when I offered that flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of honoring the Buddha. 26. Twenty aeons ago from now, eight Khattiyas named Soṇṇābhā; Endowed with seven treasures, powerful Wheel-turning Monarchs. 27. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha's the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kaṇikārachattiya spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the Elder Kaṇikārachattiya. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Sappidāyaka 28. "Phussa was the name of the Blessed One, the recipient of offerings; The hero walked on the street, extinguishing [the defilements of] the great multitude. 29. "Gradually, the Blessed One came near me; Then, taking that bowl, I gave ghee and oil. 30. "Ninety-two aeons ago, when I gave ghee then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of ghee. 31. "Fifty-six aeons ago, there was one named Samodaka; Endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 32. "The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Sappidāyaka spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Sappidāyaka. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Yūthikapupphiya 33. "On the bank of the Candabhāgā river, I was going downstream; There I saw the Self-Awakened One, like a flowering Sāla king. 34. "Taking a Yūthika flower, I approached the Great Sage; With a clear and joyful mind, I offered it to the Buddha. 35. "Ninety-four aeons ago, when I offered the flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 36. "Sixty-seven aeons ago, there was one named Sāmuddhara; Endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 37. "The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Yūthikapupphiya spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna of the Elder Yūthikapupphiya. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Dussadāyaka 38. "In the beautiful city of Tivarā, I was a prince then; Having received a present, I gave it to the peaceful one. 39. "The Blessed One accepted it, touched the cloth with his hand; Siddhattha, having accepted it, [rose] into the air... rose up into the sky. 40. When the Buddha was walking, cloths flew behind him; There I gladdened my mind, "The Buddha is our foremost person." 41. Ninety-four aeons ago, the cloth I then gave; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that cloth-gift. 42. Sixty-seven aeons ago, a Wheel-turning Monarch then I was; named Parisuddha, a mighty king of men. 43. The four analytical knowledges...pe... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Dussadāyaka recited these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Dussadāyaka, the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of Elder Samādapaka 44. In the city of Bandhumatī, there was a great multitude of people; I was their chief, and they were bound to me. 45. Having gathered them all, I exhorted them to meritorious deeds: "Let us build a hall for the Saṅgha, the unsurpassed field of merit." 46. "So be it!" they assented, following my will; And having completed that hall, we gave it to Vipassī. 47. Ninety-one aeons ago, the hall I then gave; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that hall-gift. 48. Sixty-nine aeons ago, there was one lord of men; named Ādeyyo, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 49. The four analytical knowledges...pe... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Samādapaka recited these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Samādapaka, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of Elder Pañcaṅguliya 50. The Blessed One was named Tissa, foremost in the world, a bull among men; He entered the Perfumed Chamber, the sage skilled in dwellings. 51. Taking a fragrant garland, I went near the Conqueror; And without a sound, to the Fully Awakened One, I offered a five-finger-flower. 52. Ninety-two aeons ago, the fragrance I then offered; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that five-finger-flower. 53. Seventy-two aeons ago, I was a king named Sayampabha; Possessing the seven treasures, a mighty universal monarch. 54. The four analytical knowledges, And the eight liberations; The six direct knowledges are realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Pañcaṅguliyo spoke these verses. The Tenth Apadāna of Elder Pañcaṅguliyo. The Seventeenth Chapter: Supāricariya. Its Summary – Supāricari, Kaṇaverī, Khajjaka, Desapūjaka; Kaṇikāra, Sappidada, Yūthika, Dussadāyaka; And Māḷa, Pañcaṅgulika, Fifty-four verses.
