16. The Chapter on Bandhujīvaka 1. The Apadāna of Thera Bandhujīvaka 1. Like the moon, pure and clean, Serene and unclouded; Whose delight in existence is exhausted, Who has crossed over the world's entanglement. 2. Extinguishing the suffering of beings, Having seen the excellent one who crosses over; The sage meditating in the forest, One-pointed and well-composed. 3. Bandhujīvaka flowers, Having strung them with a thread, I; Offered them to the Buddha, To Sikhī, the kinsman of the world. 4. Thirty-one aeons ago, The deed I did then; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 5. Seven aeons ago from now, A great glorious king of men; Named Samantacakkhu, A mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 6. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Bandhujīvaka Thera spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Bandhujīvaka Thera. 2. The Apadāna of Thera Tambapupphiya 7. Engaged in another's work, I committed an offense; I ran to the edge of the forest, Filled with fear and dread. 8. Seeing a flowering tree, Well-formed, with clustered blossoms; Taking a Tamba flower, I scattered it upon the Bodhi. 9. Having swept that Bodhi, The excellent Pāṭali tree; Having folded my legs, I sat at the foot of the Bodhi. 10. Searching for the lost path, They came near me; And seeing them there, I, Turned my mind to the supreme Bodhi. 11. Having worshipped the Bodhi, With a mind serene; I fell into a deep abyss, A terrifying mountain chasm. 12. Ninety-one aeons ago, The flower I offered; I know no suffering, This is the fruit of worshipping the Bodhi. 13. And three aeons ago from now, I was a well-restrained king; Endowed with seven treasures, A mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 14. The four analytical knowledges... and so on... ... the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Tambapupphiya spoke these verses. The Second Apadāna of Thera Tambapupphiya. 3. The Apadāna of Thera Vīthisammajjaka 15. Like the rising sun, with its yellow rays; Like the moon on the fifteenth day, the World-Leader was departing. 16. Sixty-eight thousand, all were Arahants; They surrounded the Fully Awakened One, the Lord of bipeds, the Bull among men. 17. Having swept that street, as the World-Leader was departing; I raised a banner there, with a mind utterly clear. 18. Ninety-one aeons ago, I raised that banner; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the banner-offering. 19. Four aeons from then, I was a king of great power; Endowed with all aspects, renowned as Sudhaja. 20. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Vīthisammajjaka spoke these verses. The Third Apadāna of Thera Vīthisammajjaka. 4. The Apadāna of Thera Kakkārupupphapūjaka 21. Being a deva-son, I worshipped the leader Sikhi; Taking a kakkāru flower, I offered it to the Buddha. 22. Thirty-one aeons ago, I offered that flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 23. And nine aeons from then, I was a supreme king; Endowed with seven jewels, a powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 24. The four analytical knowledges... (and so on)... the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kakkārupupphapūjaka spoke these verses. The Fourth Apadāna of Thera Kakkārupupphapūjaka. 5. The Apadāna of Thera Mandāravapupphapūjaka 25. Being a deva-son, I worshipped the leader Sikhi; With a mandārava flower, I offered it to the Buddha. 26. For seven days it was a canopy, a divine garland for the Tathāgata; All people gathered, and bowed... they saw the Tathāgata. 27. “Thirty-one aeons ago, when I offered flowers; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 28. “And ten aeons ago from now, I was a glorious king; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 29. “The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Mandāravapupphapūjaka spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna is that of the Elder Mandāravapupphapūjaka. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Kadambapupphiya 30. “Not far from the Himalayas, is a mountain named Kukkuṭa; at the foot of that mountain, seven Buddhas dwell. 31. “Seeing a blooming Kadamba, like a rising lamp-king; taking it with both hands, I scattered it over the seven Buddhas. 32. “Ninety-four aeons ago, when I offered flowers; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 33. “Ninety-two aeons ago from now, there were seven named Puppha; endowed with seven jewels, mighty Wheel-turning Monarchs. 34. “The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Kadambapupphiya spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna is that of the Elder Kadambapupphiya. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Tiṇasūlaka 35. “Not far from the Himalayas, is a mountain named Bhūtagaṇa; a single Victor dwells there, self-existent, detached from the world. 36. “Taking a blade of grass, I offered it to the Buddha; for one hundred thousand minus one aeons, I did not fall into a lower realm. 37. “Eleven aeons ago from now, I was a single Dharaṇīruha; endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 38. “The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Tiṇasūlaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna is that of the Elder Tiṇasūlaka. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Nāgapupphiya 39. “A brahmin named Suvaccha, skilled in mantras; attended by his disciples, dwelt among the mountains 40. Padumuttara by name, the Conqueror, receiver of offerings; Desiring to uplift me, he came to my presence. 41. He walked in the air, smoked and blazed likewise; Knowing my delight, he departed facing east. 42. And seeing that wonder, that astonishing hair-raising sight; Taking a Nāga flower, I scattered it on his path. 43. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I scattered that flower; By that serene mind, I have not been reborn in a bad destination. 44. In the thirty-first aeon, I was a great worthy king; Endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 45. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Nāgapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of Nāgapupphiya Thera. 46. Having entered a forest grove, I lived as a hunter; Seeing a blooming Punnāga flower, I remembered the Supreme Buddha. 47. Having gathered that flower, fragrant, scented, beautiful; Making a stupa on the sand, I offered it to the Buddha. 48. Ninety-two aeons ago, when I worshipped that flower; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of Buddha-worship. 49. In the ninety-first aeon, I was one who dispelled darkness; Endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning monarch. 50. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Punnāgapupphiya Thera spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of Punnāgapupphiya Thera. 51. Not far from the Himalayas, there was a great natural lake; Covered with lotuses and water lilies, strewn with white lotuses. 52. Kukuttha by name, I was a bird there then; Virtuous, endowed with wisdom, skilled in merits and demerits. 53. Padumuttara, the knower of the world, receiver of offerings; Not far from the natural lake, the great sage was walking. 54. Having plucked a water-lily, I offered it to the Great Seer; Knowing my intention, The Great Sage accepted it. 55. Having given that gift, Impelled by that wholesome root, For a hundred thousand aeons, I did not go to a bad destination. 56. In a hundred aeons from this, There were those named Varuṇa; Eight of these rulers of men, Powerful wheel-turning monarchs. 57. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Kumudadāyaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Kumudadāyaka, the tenth. The sixteenth chapter, Bandhujīvaka. Its summary – Bandhujīva, Tambapupphī, Vīthikakkārupupphiya; Mandārava and Kadambī, Sūlaka, Nāgapupphiya; Punnāga, Komudī, Fifty-six verses are proclaimed.
