15. The Parasol Chapter 1. The Apadāna of Thera Atichattiya 1. When the Blessed One, the supreme seer of meaning, had attained final Nibbāna; I had a great parasol made, and placed it upon the stupa. 2. Coming from time to time, I paid homage to the leader of the world; Having made a flower canopy, I placed it upon the parasol. 3. For seventeen hundred aeons, I ruled as king of devas; I do not go to human existence, this is the fruit of stupa worship. 4. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Atichattiya Thera spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Atichattiya Thera. 2. The Apadāna of Thera Thambhāropaka 5. When the Lord of the world, the bull among men, the seer of Dhamma, had attained Nibbāna; I erected a flag-pole at the shrine of the supreme Buddha. 6. Having made a ladder, I ascended the supreme stupa; Taking a jasmine flower, I placed it upon the stupa. 7. Oh, the Buddha! Oh, the Dhamma! Oh, the Teacher's attainment for us! I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of stupa worship. 8. In the ninety-fourth aeon, kings named Thūpasīkhasa; Sixteen were they, wheel-turning monarchs of great power. 9. The four analytical knowledges... (as before) ...the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thambhāropaka Thera spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Thambhāropaka Thera. 3. The Apadāna of Thera Vedikāraka 10. When the Lord of the world, the supreme seer of the beloved, had attained Nibbāna; With a clear and joyful mind, I made a pearl railing. 11. Having surrounded it with jewels, I made a supreme railing; Having made a great offering at the railing, I passed away there. 12. Whatever realm I am reborn in, whether divine or human; Jewels appear in the sky, this is the fruit of that meritorious deed. 13. In the sixteen hundredth aeon, kings named Maṇippabhāsa; Thirty-six were they... Kings there were, wheel-turners, mighty in strength. 14. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Vedikāraka spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of the Elder Vedikāraka. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Saparivāriya 15. "The Conqueror named Padumuttara, foremost in the world, a bull among men; Having blazed like a mass of fire, the Fully Awakened One attained final Nibbāna. 16. And when the Great Hero had attained Nibbāna, a vast stupa was made; From afar they attended, at the supreme best relic-house. 17. With a serene mind, joyful, I made a sandalwood railing; And the mass of the stupa was seen, suitable for the stupa then. 18. In whatever existence I was reborn, whether among devas or among humans; I do not see any inferiority for myself, this is the fruit of my former deed. 19. Fifteen hundred aeons ago, eight people were there; All of them had the same name, wheel-turners, mighty in strength. 20. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Saparivāriya spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Saparivāriya. 5. The Apadāna of Elder Umāpupphiya 21. "When the world-honored one had attained Nibbāna, the recipient of offerings; When the Blessed One Siddhattha [had attained Nibbāna], a great stupa festival took place. 22. When the festival was taking place, for the great sage Siddhattha; Taking an umā flower, I placed it on the stupa. 23. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I placed that flower; I do not know any bad destination, this is the fruit of the stupa offering. 24. And nine aeons from now, named Somadeva; Eighty-five kings, wheel-turners, mighty in strength. 25. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Umāpupphiya Thus he spoke these verses. The Fifth Apadāna: Umāpupphiya Thera. 6. The Apadāna of Anulepadāyaka Thera. 26. For the sage Anomadassī, I made a Bodhi platform. Having given a lump of plaster, I did the plastering work. 27. Seeing that well-done deed, Anomadassī, the supreme man, The Teacher, standing in the Sangha of monks, Spoke this verse: 28. ‘By this plastering deed, And by these aspirations, Having experienced prosperity, He will make an end of suffering.’ 29. I am of serene countenance, One-pointed, well-composed. I bear my final body In the dispensation of the Perfectly Enlightened One. 30. A hundred aeons ago from now, I was, complete, not lacking, A king named Sabbaghana, A powerful Wheel-turning monarch. 31. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable Thera Anulepadāyaka spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna: Anulepadāyaka Thera. 7. The Apadāna of Maggadāyaka Thera. 32. Having crossed a small river, The Seer went into the forest. I saw that Buddha, Siddhattha, with excellent marks. 33. Taking a spade and a basket, Having made that path even, Having saluted the Teacher, I gladdened my own mind. 34. Ninety-four aeons ago, The deed I did then, I do not know a bad destination; This is the fruit of giving a path. 35. Fifty-seven aeons ago, I was one ruler of people, Named Suppabuddha, That leader, a lord of men. 36. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed the venerable Thera Maggadāyaka spoke these verses. The Seventh Apadāna: Maggadāyaka Thera. 8. The Apadāna of Phalakadāyaka Thera. 37. Formerly I was a cart-maker, Well-skilled in carpentry. Having made a sandalwood plank, I gave it to the Kinsman of the World. 38. This mansion shines forth, Well-made of gold. Elephant-vehicles, horse- vehicles, divine vehicles are ready. 39. Palaces and palanquins arise as I wish; My imperturbable treasure, this is the fruit of the plank. 40. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave the plank; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the plank. 41. In the fifty-seventh aeon, four named Nimmitā; Endowed with seven treasures, powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 42. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Phalakadāyaka recited these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Phalakadāyaka, the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Vaṭaṃsakiya 43. Sumedha by name, self-existent, unconquered; Cultivating seclusion, he entered the great forest. 44. Seeing a flowering pine tree, having made a garland; I offered it to the Buddha, in the presence of the world's leader. 45. Thirty thousand aeons ago, when I offered the flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 46. In the nineteen hundredth aeon, sixteen named Sunimmitā; Endowed with seven treasures, powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 47. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Vaṭaṃsakiya recited these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Vaṭaṃsakiya, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Pallaṅkadāyaka 48. To the Blessed One Sumedha, the world's chief, the steadfast one; A couch was given by me, with an upper cover and a backrest. 49. Endowed with seven treasures, such was the couch then; Understanding my intention, it always arises for me. 50. Thirty thousand aeons ago, when I gave the couch; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the couch. 51. Twenty thousand aeons ago, three people named Suvaṇṇābha; Endowed with seven treasures, powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 52. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Pallaṅkadāyaka recited these verses. The tenth Apadāna of Elder Pallaṅkadāyaka. The fifteenth Chattavagga. Its summary – Umbrella, and Pillar, and Altar, and Parivārumapupphiya; Anointment, and Path, and Plank, and Garland; And Pallaṅkadāyī, and verses, fifty-six are proclaimed.
