Chapter 11. The Alms-Giver 1. The Apadāna of Thera Bhikkhadāyaka 1. The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, Receiver of offerings; Having emerged from the excellent, Having come from the forest to the city. 2. I gave a spoonful of alms, To Siddhattha, the great sage; To the Great Hero, the Such-One, Who was tranquil with wisdom. 3. As he followed step by step, Quenching the great multitude; Great joy arose in me, For the Buddha, kinsman of the sun. 4. Ninety-four aeons ago, When I gave that gift; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of giving alms. 5. Eighty-seven aeons ago, Named Mahāreṇu; Seven were these Wheel-turning monarchs, Endowed with seven jewels. 6. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Bhikkhadāyaka spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Thera Bhikkhadāyaka. 2. The Apadāna of Thera Ñāṇasaññika 7. The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, Like a noble bull; Like an elephant in rut, The great sage. 8. Illuminating all directions, Like the full moon king; Proceeding along the road, I saw the foremost of the world. 9. Having gladdened my mind in knowledge, And raising my hands in reverence; With a clear and joyful mind, I saluted Siddhattha. 10. Ninety-four aeons ago, When I did that deed; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the perception of knowledge. 11. Seventy-three aeons ago, There were sixteen supreme men; Endowed with seven jewels, Powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 12. The four analytical knowledges...and so on... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Ñāṇasaññika spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Thera Ñāṇasaññika. 3. The Apadāna of Thera Uppalahatthiya 13. I was living in Tivarā, I was a garland-maker then; I saw the Stainless Buddha, Siddhattha, honored by the world. 14. With a clear and joyful mind, I offered a handful of flowers; Wherever I am reborn, By the power of that deed. 15. I experience desired results, Of my good deed done before; Surrounded by beautiful garlands, This is the fruit of the flower offering. 16. Ninety-four aeons ago, When I offered the flowers; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the flower worship. 17. Beginning ninety-four (aeons), Excluding the present one; Five hundred kings there were, Named Najjusamana. 18. The four analytical knowledges…and so on… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 19. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I offered jasmine flowers; Seven flowers at his feet, Scattered by me with a smile. 20. By that deed today, I overcome humans and devas; I bear my final body, In the teaching of the Perfectly Enlightened One. 21. Ninety-four aeons ago, When I offered the flowers; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of the flower worship. 22. Thirteen Wheel-turning monarchs, Were named Samantagandha; In the fifth aeon from now, Rulers of the four continents. 23. The four analytical knowledges…and so on… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 24. Named Sudassana, I was a garland-maker then; I saw the Stainless Buddha, Foremost in the world, a bull among men. 25. Taking jasmine flowers, I worshipped Padumuttara; With purified eye, joyful mind, I attained the divine eye. 26. By this flower worship, And by the aspirations of my mind; For a hundred thousand eons, I did not fall into a bad destination. 27. There were sixteen kings, named Devuttara; Thirty-six eons ago, they were mighty Wheel-Turning Monarchs. 28. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Elder Muṭṭhipupphiya spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the Elder Muṭṭhipupphiya. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Udakapūjaka 29. The Buddha, golden-hued, going in the sky; Like a blazing fire, like a burning flame. 30. Taking water in my hand, I sprinkled it into the air; The Great Hero received it, the compassionate Buddha, the sage. 31. Standing in the sky, the Teacher, named Padumuttara; Knowing my intention, spoke this verse. 32. “By this gift of water, and by the joy produced; Even for a hundred thousand eons, you will not fall into a bad destination.” 33. By that action, O Lord of bipeds, Chief of the world, Bull among men; I have attained the unmoving state, having abandoned victory and defeat. 34. Named Sahassarāja, there were three Wheel-Turning Monarchs; In sixty-five hundred eons, rulers of the four continents. 35. The four analytical knowledges…etc… the Buddha’s teaching was done. Thus indeed, the Elder Udakapūjaka spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Udakapūjaka. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Naḷamāliya 36. To the Buddha Padumuttara, Chief of the world, the steadfast one; Seated on a grass mat, the tranquil, steadfast one. 37. Taking a reed garland, and tying a fan; I offered it to the Buddha, the Lord of bipeds, the steadfast one. 38. Having received it, the Omniscient One, the Leader of the world; Knowing my intention, spoke this verse. 39. “Just as my body is cooled, and no fever exists; So too, may your mind be freed, from the three fires.” 40. All the devas gathered, all those in the forest… white. We shall hear the Buddha's word, and gladden the donor. 41. The Blessed One was seated there, surrounded by the assembly of devas; Gladdening the donor, he spoke these verses. 42. "By this seed-offering, and by the aspirations of the mind; One named Subbata, will become a Wheel-turning Monarch. 43. "By the remainder of that kamma, impelled by a root of merit; One named Māluta, will become a Wheel-turning Monarch." 44. "By this seed-offering, and by great reverence; For a hundred thousand aeons, he will not be reborn in a bad destination. 45. In thirty thousand aeons, there were thirty-eight Subbatas; In twenty-nine thousand, there were eight named Māluta. 46. The four analytical knowledges...etc.... The Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Naḷamāliya spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna is of the Elder Naḷamāliya. The seventh Recitation Section. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Āsanupaṭṭhāhaka (Seat-Provider) 47. "Having entered a forest grove, quiet and undisturbed; A lion's seat was given by me, to the Seer of the Goal, the Such One. 48. Taking a garland in hand, and circumambulating him; Having attended the Teacher, I departed facing north. 49. By that kamma, O Lord of bipeds, Chief of the world, Bull among men; I extinguish myself, all existences are uprooted. 50. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, the gift I gave then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the lion's seat. 51. From here, seven hundred aeons, a Khattiya named Sannibbāpaka, endowed with seven jewels, a Wheel-turning Monarch of great power. 52. The four analytical knowledges...etc.... The Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Āsanupaṭṭhāhaka spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna is of the Elder Āsanupaṭṭhāhaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Biḷālidāyaka (Cat-Giver) 53. "Not far from the Himalayas, I lived on a leaf-bed; Addicted to food, and I was fond of sleeping. ] then. 54. Digging up kalambas, And biḷāli takkalas; Kola, bhallātaka, billa, Having gathered, I prepared. 55. Padumuttara, knower of the world, Recipient of offerings; Knowing my intention, Came to my presence. 56. The great Nāga having arrived, God of gods, chief of men; Taking the biḷāli, I poured it into his bowl. 57. The Great Hero partook, Delighting me then; Having partaken, the Omniscient One, Spoke this verse. 58. ‘Having gladdened your mind, You gave me biḷāli; For a hundred thousand aeons, You will not be reborn in a bad destination.’ 59. My last existence is now, All rebirths are uprooted; I bear my final body, In the dispensation of the Fully Self-Awakened One. 60. In the fifty-fourth aeon, There was a king named Sumekhaliya; Endowed with seven jewels, A powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 61. The four analytical knowledges…etc… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Biḷālidāyaka spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna is that of the Elder Biḷālidāyaka. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Reṇupūjaka 62. The Buddha of golden hue, Like the sun with a hundred rays; Illuminating all directions, Like the full moon. 63. Surrounded by disciples, As the earth by oceans; Taking dust in my hand, I sprinkled it on Vipassī. 64. In the ninety-first aeon, When I sprinkled the dust; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 65. In the forty-fifth aeon, There was a khattiya named Reṇu; Endowed with seven jewels, A powerful Wheel-turning Monarch. 66. The four analytical knowledges…etc… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Reṇupūjaka spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna is that of the Elder Reṇupūjaka. The eleventh chapter is Bhikkhadāyī Vagga. Its summary – Bhikkhadāyī, Ñāṇasaññī, Hatthiyo, Padapūjako; Muṭṭhipupphī, Udakado, Naḷamālī, Upaṭṭhako; Biḷālidāyī, R And deer, And sixty-six verses.
