The Chapter of Sudhā The Apadāna of Thera Sudhāpiṇḍiya 1. To one who honors those worthy of honor, whether Buddhas or disciples; who have overcome proliferation, who have crossed over sorrow and lamentation. 2. To one who honors such ones, extinguished, fearless from all sides; it is not possible to count the merit, by anyone, even this much. 3. Even if one were to cause to be a sovereign over the four continents here; this, for a single act of honoring, is not worth a sixteenth part. 4. To Siddhattha, the foremost of men, at his stupa, in the space between the fruits; a lump of plaster was given by me, with a mind greatly serene. 5. Ninety-four aeons ago, the deed I did then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that plaster. 6. Thirty aeons from now, named Paṭisaṅkhāra; endowed with seven treasures, there were thirteen Wheel-turning monarchs. 7. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. The Apadāna of Thera Sucintika 8. To Tissa, the world's protector, I gave a clean seat; joyful, with a joyful mind, to the Buddha, kinsman of the sun. 9. Eighteen aeons ago, I was a king named Mahāruci; and my wealth was vast, and my couch was not small. 10. Having given a seat to the Buddha, with a greatly serene mind; I experience my own deed, well-done by myself in the past. 11. Ninety-two aeons ago, the seat I gave then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gift of a seat. 12. Thirty-eight aeons ago, there were three Wheel-turning monarchs; Ruci, and Uparuci, and Mahāruci, the third. 13. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. The Apadāna of Thera Aḍḍhaceḷaka 14. To the Blessed One Tissa, I gave half a cloth. I was filled with great compassion, though afflicted by a bad state. 15. Having given half a cloth, I rejoiced in heaven for an eon. In the remaining eons, good deeds were done by me. 16. Ninety-two eons ago, when I gave that cloth, I have not known a bad destination; this is the fruit of that cloth-giving. 17. Fifty-one eons ago, there were thirty-two kings, wheel-turners, named Samantacchadana, lords of men. 18. The four analytical knowledges…etc… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Aḍḍhaceḷaka spoke these verses. The Aḍḍhaceḷaka Elder’s Apadāna, the third. 4. The Sūcidāyaka Elder’s Apadāna 19. Formerly I was a smith, in the excellent city of Bandhumā. A needle was given by me, to the Great Seer Vipassī. 20. Knowledge like a diamond point, comes from such a deed. I am dispassionate, I am liberated, I have attained the destruction of defilements. 21. All past existences, and present and future ones; I have discerned all with knowledge; this is the fruit of giving a needle. 22. Ninety-one eons ago, there were seven named Vajira; endowed with seven jewels, mighty wheel-turning monarchs. 23. The four analytical knowledges…etc… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Sūcidāyaka spoke these verses. The Sūcidāyaka Elder’s Apadāna, the fourth. 5. The Gandhamāliya Elder’s Apadāna 24. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I made a fragrant stupa. Covered with jasmine flowers, it was made suitable for the Buddha. 25. The Buddha, leader of the world, like a golden mountain peak, shining like a blue water-lily, like a blazing fire. 26. Like a supreme bull-elephant, like a well-bred… the best of ascetics; Seated, the foremost of ascetics, surrounded by the assembly of monks. 27. Having worshipped the Teacher's feet, I departed facing north; Ninety-four aeons ago, I offered a garland of perfume. 28. By the fruit of the deed done to the Buddha, I especially; Do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 29. In the forty-ninth aeon, there were sixteen; Kings named Devagandha, they were Wheel-turning monarchs. 30. The four analytical knowledges… done is the Buddha’s teaching. Thus indeed, the Elder Gandhamāliya spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna of the Elder Gandhamāliya. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Tipupphiya 31. I was formerly a hunter, in the forest, in the wilderness; Seeing a green Pāṭalī tree, I scattered three flowers. 32. Taking the fallen leaves, I then threw them out; Internally pure, externally pure, well-freed, without defilements. 33. As if face to face with the Fully Awakened One, Vipassī, the leader of the world; Having saluted the Pāṭalī tree, I passed away there. 34. Ninety-one aeons ago, I worshipped the Bodhi tree; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Bodhi tree. 35. There were thirteen kings named Samantapāsādika; In the thirty-third aeon from now, mighty Wheel-turning monarchs. 36. The four analytical knowledges… done is the Buddha’s teaching. Thus indeed, the Elder Tipupphiya spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna of the Elder Tipupphiya. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Madhupiṇḍika 37. Seeing in the forest, in the wilderness, quiet and undisturbed; Siddhattha, the best of sages, the recipient of offerings. 38. The great elephant, extinguished, like a noble thoroughbred; Shining like a medicinal herb, worshipped by the assembly of devas. 39. Joy They said to me then, knowledge arose then; Having risen from concentration, having given honey to the Teacher. 40. Having worshipped the Teacher's feet, I departed facing east; In the thirty-fourth eon, I was a king named Sudassana. 41. Honey flowed from the lotus-stalks, and in the food then; A rain of honey rained down, this is the fruit of former kamma. 42. In the ninety-fourth eon, the honey I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the honey-gift. 43. In the thirty-fourth eon from now, those four Sudassanas; Endowed with seven treasures, mighty Wheel-turning monarchs. 44. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 45. To the Blessed One Siddhattha, I gave a leaf-mat; And all around, I scattered flowers as an offering. 46. I enjoy a delightful palace, of such quality, very valuable; And costly flowers, rain down upon my couch. 47. I lie down on a couch, adorned with a flower-spread; And a rain of flowers, rains down upon my couch then. 48. In the ninety-fourth eon, I gave a leaf-mat; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the mat. 49. Named "Grass-Mat-Givers", those seven Wheel-turning monarchs; From now in the fifth eon, those lords of men arose. 50. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 51. For the Blessed One Vipassī, there was a great multitude; I was a helper, engaged in all duties. 52. And I had no gift to give, to the Well-gone One, my... the faultless one's; I bowed at the Teacher's feet, with a mind perfectly clear. 53. In the ninety-first eon, I performed service. I know no bad destination; this is the fruit of that service. 54. And in the eighth eon from this, I was a king named Sucintita, endowed with seven jewels, a mighty Wheel-turning Monarch. 55. The four analytical knowledges... etc. ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Veyyāvaccaka Thera spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of the Elder Veyyāvaccaka. 10. The Apadāna of the Elder Buddhupaṭṭhaka 56. Of the Blessed One Vipassī, I was a conch-blower. I was constantly engaged in service to the Well-gone, the Great Seer. 57. See the fruit of service to the World's Protector, the Imperturbable One! Sixty thousand musical instruments always surround me. 58. In the ninety-first eon, I served the Great Seer. I know no bad destination; this is the fruit of that service. 59. In the twenty-fourth eon from this, named Mahānigghosa, there were sixteen kings, mighty Wheel-turning Monarchs. 60. The four analytical knowledges... etc. ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Buddhupaṭṭhaka Thera spoke these verses. The tenth Apadāna of the Elder Buddhupaṭṭhaka. The tenth chapter is Sudhā. Its summary – Sudhā, Sucinti, Ceḷa, Sūcī, and Gandhamāliya; Tipupphiya, Madhusenā, Veyyāvacca, and Upaṭṭhaka; Sixty verses exactly are recounted in this chapter. Now the chapter summary – The Buddha Chapter is the first, Sīhāsani and Subhūti; Kuṇḍadhāna and Upāli, Bījanisaka and Cinti. Nāgasamāla, Timira, with the Sudhā Chapter, these are ten; Fourteen hundred and fifty-five verses exactly. The ten chapters of the Buddha Section. The first hundred (Apadānas) is completed.
