9. Timira Chapter 1. The Account of Elder Timirapupphiya 1. On the Candabhāgā river bank, I was going downstream; Seeing a recluse seated, Perfectly serene, unagitated. 2. There, making my mind clear, I thought thus at that time; This one, crossed over, will ferry; This one, tamed, will tame. 3. This one, comforted, will comfort; This one, peaceful, will pacify; This one, freed, will free; This one, extinguished, will extinguish. 4. Thus having thought, Of the great sage Siddhattha; Taking a timira flower, I scattered it on his head. 5. Having raised my hands in reverence, And having circumambulated him; Having worshipped the Teacher's feet, I departed in another direction. 6. No sooner had I gone a short distance, A king of beasts harassed me; Following a precipice, I fell down right there. 7. Ninety-four aeons ago, The flower I offered; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of that flower offering. 8. In the fifty-sixth aeon, There were seven greatly renowned ones; Endowed with seven treasures, Powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 9. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Timirapupphiya spoke these verses. The first account of the elder Timirapupphiya. 2. The Account of Elder Gatasaññaka 10. By birth I was seven years old, I went forth into homelessness; I worshipped the Teacher's feet, With a perfectly serene mind. 11. Seven Nāṅgalakī flowers, I tossed into the sky; Intending for Tissa the Buddha, An ocean of infinite virtues. 12. Having worshipped the path Followed by the Fortunate One, with a joyful mind; And I made an añjali then, Delighted with my own hands. 13. Ninety-two aeons ago from this, The deed I did then; I know no bad destination, This is the fruit of that Buddha-worship. 14. Eighth aeon from this, Three ag... there were great leaders; Endowed with seven treasures, Powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 15. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Gatasaññaka Spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Elder Gatasaññaka. 3. The Apadāna of Elder Nipannañjalika 16. "I was sitting at a tree's root, Afflicted by extreme illness; I had attained great compassion, In the forest, in the wilderness. 17. Out of compassion, The Teacher Tissa approached me; While I was lying down, I placed my hands together at my head. 18. With a serene mind, joyful, To the supreme one of all beings; Having saluted the Fully Awakened One, I passed away there. 19. Ninety-two aeons ago from here, When I worshipped the supreme person; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of that worship. 20. Five aeons ago from here, There were five great leaders; Endowed with seven treasures, Powerful Wheel-turning monarchs. 21. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Nipannañjalika Spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of Elder Nipannañjalika. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Adhopupphiya 22. "That monk named Abhibhū, The chief disciple of Sikhi (Buddha); Of great power, possessing the three knowledges, Approached the Himalayas. 23. I too was in the Himalayas, A sage in a delightful hermitage; I dwelt in immeasurable states, And then I dwelt in psychic powers. 24. Like a bird in the sky, I soared over the mountain; Taking a downward-facing flower, I came to the mountain. 25. Taking seven flowers, I scattered them on his head; And when looked upon by the hero, I departed facing east. 26. I prepared my dwelling, Having reached my hermitage; Taking a load of salt, I set out for the mountain pass. 27. A python crushed me, Terrible... A great, mighty flood; Recalling my former deed, I passed away there. 28. Thirty-one aeons ago, I offered a flower; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of the flower offering. 29. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Adhopupphiya Thera spoke these verses. 30. In the Himālaya mountains, I formerly dwelled; Wearing a deer-skin upper robe, I lived in the mountain's interior. 31. Seeing the Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, Like the sun with a hundred rays; Gone into the forest, Like a flowering Sāla king-tree. 32. Having gladdened my mind by the rays, Of Vipassī, the great sage; Raising my hands in reverence, I bowed, With my head, kneeling. 33. Ninety-one aeons ago, The deed I did then; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of the perception of rays. 34. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Raṃsisaññaka Thera spoke these verses. 35. In the Himālaya mountains, I wore bark-fiber robes; Having ascended the walking path, I sat facing east. 36. Seeing the Fortunate One on the mountain, Phussa, then delighting in meditation; Having raised my hands in reverence, I gladdened my mind by his rays. 37. Ninety-two aeons ago, The perception I gained then; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of the perception of rays. 38. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Raṃsisaññaka Thera spoke these verses. 39. In the Himālaya mountains, I wore a rough deer-skin; Seeing Phussa, the supreme Victor, p With a plough in hand, I gave fruit. 40. That fruit which I gave with a mind full of faith; In whatever existence I arise, fruit arises for me. 41. Ninety-two eons ago, that fruit I gave; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of giving fruit. 42. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed the venerable Elder Phaladāyaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Phaladāyaka, the seventh. 8. The Apadāna of Elder Saddasaññaka 43. On the Himavanta mountain, I dwelt on a bed of leaves; As Phussa spoke the Dhamma, at the sound I gladdened my mind. 44. Ninety-two eons ago, that deed I did then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of that meritorious deed. 45. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed the venerable Elder Saddasaññaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Saddasaññaka, the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of Elder Bodhisiñcaka 46. Of the Blessed One Vipassī, there was a great Bodhi festival; Having gone forth (as a renunciant), I went there then. 47. Taking flower-water, I sprinkled the Bodhi tree; He will release us, the released one, He will extinguish (suffering), the extinguished one. 48. Ninety-one eons ago, that Bodhi tree I sprinkled; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of sprinkling the Bodhi tree. 49. In the thirty-third eon, there were lords of men; Named Udakasecana (Water-sprinklers), these eight Wheel-turning monarchs. 50. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed the venerable Elder Bodhisiñcaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Bodhisiñcaka, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of Elder Padumapupphiya 51. Having entered a lotus forest, as I picked lotuses; There I saw the Buddha Phussa, with the thirty-two excellent marks. 52. Having taken a lotus flower, I threw it up into the sky; Remembering my past deeds, I went forth into homelessness. 53. Having gone forth, with body, and with mind restrained; Having abandoned evil speech, I purified my livelihood. 54. Ninety-two aeons ago from here, when I offered a flower; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 55. And eighteen kings, named Padumābhāsa, in eighteen aeons, they were forty-eight. 56. The four analytical knowledges… the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Padumapupphiya spoke these verses. The Apadāna of the Elder Padumapupphiya, the tenth. The Chapter on Timira, the ninth. Its Summary – Timira, Naṅgalīpuppha, Nippannañjalika, Adho; Two Raṃsisaññī, Phalado, and Saddasaññī, Secako; And Padmapupphī, the verses, fifty-six are declared.
