5. Upāli Chapter 1. The Apadāna of Thera Bhāgineyyupāli 1. Surrounded by thousands of Arahants, the Leader of the World; Devoted to solitude, he went to retreat. 2. Clad in a deer-skin, holding a triple staff; Surrounded by the Sangha of monks, I saw the Leader of the World. 3. Placing the deer-skin on one shoulder, raising my hands in añjali to my head; Having saluted the Fully Awakened One, I praised the Leader of the World. 4. Just as egg-born and sweat-born, spontaneously-born and womb-born; All birds like crows, are always sky-dwellers. 5. Whatever living beings there are, conscious or unconscious; All of them are immersed within your knowledge. 6. And the fragrances that are from the mountains, in the supreme Himālaya mountains; All of them are not worth even a kalā in your virtue. 7. This world with its devas, is enveloped in the darkness of delusion; When your knowledge shines, the darkness is dispelled. 8. Just as when the sun sets, beings are in darkness; So too when a Buddha has not arisen, the world is in darkness. 9. Just as the rising sun, always dispels the darkness; So too you, best of Buddhas, always dispel the darkness. 10. You are one whose mind is set on exertion, a Buddha in the world with its devas; By your delight in deeds, you gladden many people. 11. Having approved all that, the great sage Padumuttara; The wise one ascended into the sky, like a king of swans in the air. 12. Having ascended, the Fully Awakened One, the great seer Padumuttara; The Teacher, standing in the sky, spoke these verses. 13. “He who has praised this knowledge, endowed with similes; I shall proclaim him, listen to my words. 14. “‘Eighteen times, he will be a king of devas; Three hundred times, he will rule the earth as a king. 15. “‘And twenty-five times, he will be a Wheel-turning Monarch; Vast regional kingdoms, countless in number. 16. “‘In the hundred thousandth kappa, born in the Okkāka clan; By name Gotama, by clan Yes, the Teacher will be in the world. 17. “Having fallen from Tusita, impelled by wholesome roots; Though of humble birth, he will be named Upāli. 18. “He, having later gone forth, having dispelled evil; Having fully understood all defilements, will attain Nibbāna, taintless. 19. “And the Buddha Gotama, the Sakyan son of great fame, pleased; Will place him at the forefront in matters of Vinaya.” 20. I went forth with faith, my task is done, taintless; Having fully understood all defilements, I dwell taintless. 21. The Blessed One has compassion for me, I am skilled in Vinaya; Delighting in my own work, I dwell taintless. 22. Restrained by the Pātimokkha, and by the five faculties; I uphold all the Vinaya, the entire treasury of jewels. 23. And the Teacher, unsurpassed in the world, knowing my virtues; Seated in the assembly of monks, placed me at the forefront. 24. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha’s teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Upāli spoke these verses. The first Apadāna: The Elder Upāli, the nephew. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Soṇakoḷivisa 25. To the sage Anomadassī, the foremost of the world, the steadfast one; Having made a plaster with lime, I built a walking path. 26. With flowers of various colors, I covered the walking path; Having made a canopy in the sky, I fed the supreme Buddha. 27. Having raised my joined hands, having saluted the virtuous one; I then offered a long hall to the Blessed One. 28. Knowing my intention, the Teacher, unsurpassed in the world; The Blessed One, the Eye, accepted it out of compassion. 29. Having accepted it, the Fully Awakened One, worthy of offerings to gods and humans; Seated in the assembly of monks, spoke these verses. 30. “He who with a joyful mind, gave me a long hall; I will praise him, listen to my words. 31. “This one’s… In due time, endowed with meritorious deeds; A chariot yoked with a thousand (horses) will appear immediately. 32. “‘By that vehicle this person will go to the world of devas; The devas will rejoice, when he arrives at the auspicious state. 33. “‘A very valuable, excellent palace, plastered with jewels; A palace endowed with excellent pinnacled chambers, he will dwell in. 34. “‘For thirty thousand aeons, he will delight in the world of devas; For twenty-five aeons, he will be a king of devas. 35. “‘And seventy-seven times, he will be a Wheel-turning Monarch; All of them will have the same name, Yasodhara. 36. “‘Having experienced two kinds of prosperity, having accumulated a store of merit; In the twenty-eighth aeon, he will be a Wheel-turning Monarch. 37. “‘There too, an excellent palace, built by Visakamma; That city, free from ten sounds, he will dwell in. 38. “‘In an immeasurable aeon from now, a mighty earth-ruler; A king named Okkāka, will be in the realm. 39. “‘Among sixteen thousand women, she was the foremost of all; A high-born khattiyānī, will give birth to nine sons. 40. “‘Having given birth to nine sons, the khattiyānī will die; And a young, beloved maiden, will become the chief queen. 41. “‘Having pleased Okkāka, the maiden will receive a boon; Having received the boon, that maiden will banish the sons. 42. “‘And all of them, banished, will go to an excellent city; Fearing the breaking of their lineage, all will dwell with their sisters. 43. “‘And one maiden, afflicted by diseases, will be; “Lest our lineage be broken,” the khattiyas will bury her. 44. “‘A khattiya, having brought her out, will dwell with her; Then there will be a division, originating from Okkāka’s family. 45. “‘Their descendants will be, of the Koḷiya lineage by name; There they will experience human prosperity. very little. 46. ‘‘‘Having passed away from that body, he will go to the world of devas; There also, a supreme Brahma-state, he will obtain, delightful. 47. ‘‘‘Having passed away from the world of devas, urged by the root of merit; Having come to human existence, he will be named Soṇa. 48. ‘‘‘With aroused energy, with mind directed, striving in the Teacher's Dispensation; Having fully understood all defilements, he will attain Nibbāna, without defilements. 49. ‘‘‘The Blessed One, the Seer of the Endless, Gotama, the foremost of the Sakyas; The Knower of Distinction, the Great Hero, will place him in the foremost position.’ 50. ‘‘When the rain had fallen four inches, on the grass, in a windless courtyard; Standing, engaged in the practice of yoga, there is no further perfection beyond that. 51. ‘‘Tamed by the supreme taming, my mind is well-directed; All my burden is laid down, I am extinguished, without defilements. 52. ‘‘Aṅgīrasa, the great elephant, like a born lion; Having sat in the assembly of bhikkhus, he placed me in this foremost position. 53. ‘‘The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's Dispensation has been done.’’ Thus indeed, the Venerable Soṇa Koḷivisa Thera spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Soṇa Koḷivisa Thera. 3. The Apadāna of Bhaddiya Thera, son of Kāḷigodhā. 54. ‘‘To the Fully Enlightened Padumuttara, the Great Sage with a mind of loving-kindness; All people approach, the foremost leader of all worlds. 55. ‘‘Both flour and binding material, offerings, drinks, and food; All give to the Teacher, the unsurpassed field of merit. 56. ‘‘I too will give a gift, to the God of gods, the Such-one; Having invited the foremost Buddha, and the unsurpassed Saṅgha. 57. ‘‘These, sent forth by me, invited the Tathāgata; And the entire assembly of bhikkhus, the unsurpassed field of merit. 58. ‘‘A couch of a hundred thousand, golden, covered with a rug; With cushions and coverings, and made of linen and cotton; I prepared a very valuable, seat suitable for the Buddha. a piece. 59. Padumuttara, knower of the world, god of gods, chief of men; surrounded by the Sangha of monks, came to my door. 60. Having gone forth to meet the Fully Awakened One, the glorious protector of the world; with a clear mind, joyful, I invited him to my house. 61. A hundred thousand monks, and the Buddha, leader of the world; with a clear mind, joyful, I satisfied with excellent food. 62. Padumuttara, knower of the world, receiver of offerings; having sat in the assembly of monks, spoke these verses. 63. ‘By whom this seat was given, golden, covered with a rug; I will praise him, listen to my words. 64. ‘Seventy-four times, he will rule as king of devas; he will experience prosperity, surrounded by celestial nymphs. 65. ‘A thousand times, as local king, he will dwell on earth; and fifty-one times, he will be a wheel-turning monarch. 66. ‘In all realms of existence, he will be of high birth; and later, having gone forth, urged by his wholesome roots; by the name Bhaddiya, he will be a disciple of the Teacher. 67. ‘I am devoted to solitude, dwelling in a secluded abode; all fruits have been attained, today I am rid of defilements. 68. ‘Knowing all my deeds, the All-Knowing, leader of the world; having sat in the assembly of monks, placed me foremost among these.’ 69. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Bhaddiya, son of Kāḷigodhā, the Elder, spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Bhaddiya, the Elder, son of Kāḷigodhā, the third. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Sanniṭṭhāpaka 70. Having made a hut in the forest, I dwelt in a mountain cave; content with gain and loss, with fame and infamy. 71. Padumuttara, knower of the world, receiver of offerings; with a hundred thousand accomplished ones, came to my presence. 72. The great Nāga who had arrived, the best of those born from water nameless; Having spread a grass mat, I gave it to the Teacher. 73. With a joyful and happy mind, I gave gruel and water, To the upright one, With a mind utterly clear. 74. A hundred thousand aeons ago, When I gave that gift, I have known no bad destination; This is the fruit of the gruel.
