2. The Chapter of the Lion-Throne 1. The Apadāna of the Elder Who Gave a Lion-Throne 1. When the Lord of the World had attained Nibbāna, Siddhattha, the foremost of bipeds; When the teaching was widespread, in the dispensation for many people. 2. With a clear and joyful mind, I made a lion-throne. Having made a lion-throne, I made a footstool. 3. And when it rained on the lion-throne, I made a roof there. By that clarity of mind, I was reborn in Tusita. 4. Twenty-four in length, yojanas it was then; My well-made mansion, fourteen in width. 5. A hundred thousand maidens, always surround me. And a golden couch, was well-made in the sky. 6. Elephant vehicles, horse vehicles, divine vehicles are present. Palaces and palanquins, arise as desired. 7. And jewel-made couches, many others made of essence. All arise for me, this is the fruit of the lion-throne. 8. Golden, silver, crystal, beryl-made. I ascend sandals, this is the fruit of the footstool. 9. Ninety-four aeons ago, the deed I did then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of meritorious action. 10. In the seventy-third aeon, three people named Inda. In the seventy-second aeon, three named Sumana. 11. In the seventy-first aeon, three named Varuṇa. Endowed with seven jewels, rulers of the four continents. 12. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder, the Giver of the Lion-Throne, spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of the Elder Who Gave a Lion-Throne. 2. The Apadāna of the Elder Who Gave a Single Pillar 13. For the Blessed One Siddhattha, there was a great multitude. And they went for refuge to the Buddha, they had faith in the Tathāgata. 14. All having gathered and consulted, they made a pavilion for the Teacher; E Not finding a pillar, they were searching in the great forest. 15. Having seen them in the forest, I then approached the group; Raising my hands in reverence, I asked the group. 16. They, being asked by me, replied, the virtuous lay followers: "We wish to make a pavilion, but one pillar cannot be found." 17. "Give me one pillar, I will give it to the Teacher; I will bring the pillar, let them be free from worry." 18. They gave me the pillar, pleased and with joyful minds; Then, having turned back, they went to their own homes. 19. Not long after the group had gone, I then carried the pillar; Joyful with a joyful mind, I first set it up. 20. By that mental clarity, I was reborn in a celestial mansion; My dwelling was lofty, rising seven stories high. 21. While drums were being played, I always enjoyed myself; In the fifty-fifth eon, I was a king named Yasodhara. 22. Even there, my dwelling rose seven stories high; Endowed with excellent pinnacled chambers, a delightful single-pillared one. 23. In the twenty-first eon, a king named Udena; Even there, my dwelling rose seven stories high. 24. Whatever birth I was reborn into, whether divine or human; I experienced all happiness, this is the fruit of the single pillar. 25. Ninety-four eons ago, when I then gave the pillar; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the single pillar. 26. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Ekatthambhika spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of Elder Ekatthambhika. 3. The Apadāna of Elder Nanda 27. To the Blessed One Padumuttara, the foremost of the world, the steadfast one; A linen cloth was given by me, to the self-existent great sage. 28. That, the Buddha to me He declared, the one named Jalajuttara: ‘By this gift of cloth, you will be golden-colored. 29. ‘‘‘Having experienced two fulfillments, impelled by roots of merit, you will be the younger brother of the Blessed One Gotama. 30. ‘‘‘Attached to passion, fond of pleasure, given to greed for sensual pleasures, impelled by the Buddha, then you will go forth. 31. ‘‘‘Having gone forth there, impelled by roots of merit, having fully known all defilements, you will attain Nibbāna, taintless.’ 32. ‘‘In a hundred thousand aeons, four named Ceḷa; in sixty thousand aeons, four persons named Upacela. 33. ‘‘In five thousand aeons, four persons named Ceḷa; endowed with seven treasures, rulers of the four continents. 34. ‘‘The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha’s teaching done.’’ Thus indeed, the Elder Nanda spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of Elder Nanda. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Cūḷapanthaka 35. ‘‘The Victor named Padumuttara, receiver of offerings; he, withdrawn from the crowd, dwelt in the Himalayas then. 36. ‘‘I too, in the Himalayas, dwelt in a hermitage then; I approached the Great Hero, the Leader of the world, recently arrived. 37. ‘‘Taking a flower-umbrella, I approached the bull among men; I caused an interruption as he was entering absorption. 38. ‘‘Holding it up with both hands, I gave the flower-umbrella; the Blessed One, the Great Sage Padumuttara, accepted it. 39. ‘‘All the devas, delighted, approached the Himalayas; they uttered shouts of approval, the Seeing One will approve. 40. ‘‘Having said this, those devas approached the supreme man; as I was holding aloft the excellent lotus-umbrella in the sky. 41. ‘‘‘Holding up the hundred-petaled umbrella, the ascetic gave it to me; I will proclaim him, listen to my words. 42. ‘‘‘For twenty-five aeons, he will be king of devas; for forty-three a hundred thousand times, he will be a Wheel-turning Monarch. 43. “‘Whatever womb he is reborn into, whether divine or human; He will hold a lotus, standing in the open air.’ 44. “In a hundred thousand aeons, born into the Okkāka clan; A teacher named Gotama, will appear in the world. 45. “‘When the teaching is proclaimed, he will attain human existence; In a mind-made body, he will be supreme. 46. “‘There will be two brothers, both named Panthaka; Having experienced the highest goal, they will illuminate the Dispensation.’ 47. “I, eighteen years old, went forth into homelessness; I found no distinction, in the Sakyan son’s Dispensation. 48. “My progress was slow, I was despised before; And my brother sent me away, ‘Go now to your own home.’ 49. “Being sent away, in the monastery storeroom; I stood there dejected, longing for recluseship. 50. “The Blessed One came there, he stroked my head; Taking me by the arm, he led me into the monastery. 51. “Out of compassion, the Teacher, gave me a foot-wiping cloth; ‘Meditate on it as pure,’ I meditated in solitude. 52. “Taking it with my hands, I remembered the red lotus; There my mind was liberated, I attained Arahantship. 53. “In mind-made bodies, I have perfected all perfections; Having fully understood all defilements, I dwell without defilements. 54. “The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha’s Dispensation is accomplished.” Thus indeed, the Elder Cūḷapanthaka spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna is that of Elder Cūḷapanthaka. 5. The Apadāna of Elder Pilindavaccha 55. “When the world-leader, Sumedha, the foremost person, had passed away; With a clear and joyful mind, I offered worship to the stupa. 56. “Those And there were those with defilements destroyed, Sixfold-knowledgeable, greatly powerful. Having gathered them there, I offered a meal to the Sangha. 57. Of the Blessed One Sumedha, I was then the attendant. Named Sumedha by name, He then rejoiced. 58. With that clarity of mind, I was reborn in a celestial mansion. Eighty-six thousand Apsaras delighted me. 59. They always followed me, With all desires. I surpassed other devas, This is the fruit of meritorious deeds. 60. In the twenty-fifth eon, A king named Varuṇa; I was of pure food, A Wheel-turning monarch then. 61. They did not sow seeds, Nor were plows drawn. Uncultivated, ripened rice, Humans consumed. 62. Having reigned there, I went again to divinity. Then too, such Was my born wealth and prosperity. 63. Neither friends nor enemies, Nor all living beings harmed me. I was dear to all, This is the fruit of meritorious deeds. 64. In the thirty thousandth eon, The gift I then gave; I do not know misfortune, This is the fruit of the perfumed ointment. 65. In this auspicious eon, I was one ruler of people; A king of great power, A Wheel-turning monarch of great strength. 66. I, having established many people In the five precepts; Having led them to a good destination, Became dear to the devas. 67. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The sixfold knowledge realized, The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Pilindavaccha Spoke these verses. The Fifth Apadāna of Elder Pilindavaccha. 6. The Apadāna of Elder Rāhula 68. Of the Blessed Padumuttara, The foremost of the world, the steadfast one; In a seven-storied palace, I spread a mirror. 69. Surrounded by thousands of those with defilements destroyed, The great sage approached the perfumed hut, The lord of bipeds, the bull among men. 70. Vi Illuminating the Perfumed Chamber, the god of gods, chief of men; Standing in the assembly of monks, the Teacher spoke these verses. 71. ‘By which this couch was illuminated, like a well-arranged mirror; That I will praise, listen to my words. 72. ‘Made of gold, made of silver, and made of beryl; Palaces will arise, whatever are pleasing to the mind. 73. ‘Sixty-four times, the king of gods will rule as king of gods; A thousand times, a universal monarch will be, without interval. 74. ‘In the twenty-first eon, a khattiya named Vimala; Conquering the four quarters, will be a universal monarch. 75. ‘A city named Reṇuvatī, well-built with bricks; Three hundred (yojanas) in length, endowed with four squares. 76.
