The Chapter of Twelves The Verses of the Elder Uppalavaṇṇā Both mother and daughter, we became co-wives. Because of that, a profound sense of urgency arose in me, astonishing, hair-raising. Shame on desires, impure, foul-smelling, full of thorns! Where mother and daughter, we became co-wives. Seeing the danger in desires, seeing renunciation as safe, I went forth in Rājagaha, from home to homelessness. I know my past lives, the divine eye is purified. The knowledge of others' minds, the divine ear element is purified. My psychic powers are realized, the destruction of defilements is attained by me. The six higher knowledges are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Having created by psychic power a four-sided chariot, I bowed at the feet of the Buddha, the steadfast protector of the world. Approaching a tree with blossoming top, you stand alone at the foot of a Sāla tree; And there is no second person for you, foolish one, do you not fear rogues? Even a hundred thousand rogues, such as these, might gather; My hair would not stir, nor would I tremble. What will you do to me, Māra, alone? Here I vanish, or I enter your belly. I stand between your eyebrows, you will not see me standing. I am master of my mind, the bases of psychic power are well-developed. The six higher knowledges are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Desires are like spears and stakes, the aggregates are a chopping block. What you call 'delight in desires', that is now 'non-delight' for me. Delight is destroyed everywhere, the mass of darkness is shattered. Know this, evil one, you are defeated, O Destroyer! ...The Elder Uppalavaṇṇā... The Chapter of Twelves is finished.
