7. The Book of Sevens 1. The Verses of Uttarā Therī 175. Taking pestles, young men pound grain; Supporting wives and children, young men find wealth. 176. Strive in the Buddha's teaching, that which, having done, one does not regret; Quickly wash your feet, and sit down in a secluded spot. 177. Having established your mind, one-pointed and well-composed; Contemplate the formations, as other, not as self. 178. Hearing her words, the instruction of Paṭācārā; Having washed my feet, I sat down in a secluded spot. 179. In the first watch of the night, I recollected my former births; In the middle watch of the night, I purified the divine eye. 180. In the last watch of the night, I burst asunder the mass of darkness; Then I arose with the three knowledges, your instruction has been fulfilled. 181. Like the Tāvatiṃsa gods with Sakka, unconquered in battle; I shall live rejoicing, I am one with the three knowledges, without taints. ... Uttarā Therī ... 2. The Verses of Cālā Therī 182. Mindful, with faculties developed, the bhikkhunī; Penetrated the peaceful state, the cessation of formations, happiness. 183. For whom are you shaven, you appear like an ascetic; You do not delight in other sects, why do you wander so bewildered? 184. Outside of this, other sects, are dependent on views; They do not understand the Dhamma, they are not skilled in the Dhamma. 185. There is one born in the Sakya clan, the Buddha, an incomparable person; He taught me the Dhamma, the transcending of views. 186. Suffering, the origin of suffering, and the overcoming of suffering; And the noble eightfold path, leading to the cessation of suffering. 187. Hearing his words, I lived delighting in the teaching; The three knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been fulfilled. 188. Everywhere craving is destroyed, the mass of darkness is burst asunder; Thus know, Evil One, you are struck down, O Ender. ... Cālā Therī ... 3. The Verses of Upacālā Therī 189. Mindful, with the eye, the bhikkhunī with faculties developed; Penetrated that peaceful state, not served by ignoble ones. Why do you not like birth? One who is born enjoys sensual pleasures. Enjoy sensual delights, lest you regret later. For one who is born, there is death, and the cutting off of hands and feet; murder, bondage, affliction— one who is born experiences suffering. There is one born in the Sakya clan, the Fully Awakened One, unconquered. He taught me the Dhamma, the transcendence of birth. Suffering, the origin of suffering, and the transcending of suffering; and the Noble Eightfold Path, leading to the cessation of suffering. Having heard his words, I dwelt delighting in the teaching. The three knowledges have been attained, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Delight has been destroyed everywhere, the mass of darkness has been shattered. Know this, Evil One, you, Ender, are defeated!
