He bears his final body, Gone to the far shore of birth and death. 1026. In whom are established the doctrines, Of the Buddha, kinsman of the sun; On the path leading to Nibbāna, That Gotama stands. 1027. Eighty-two thousand from the Buddha I received, Two thousand from the monks; Eighty-four thousand, These are my doctrines that are taught. 1028. This person of little learning, Wastes away like an ox; His flesh increases, His wisdom does not increase. 1029. One of much learning, Who despises one of little learning with his learning; Like a blind man holding a lamp, So he appears to me. 1030. One should associate with one of much learning, And not destroy what is learned; That is the root of the holy life, Therefore one should be a holder of the Dhamma. 1031. Knowing earlier and later, knowing the meaning, Skilled in language and words; He grasps what is well-grasped, And examines the meaning. 1032. Delighted in patience he is, Having exerted, he weighs it; At the right time he strives, Well-composed within himself. 1033. One of much learning, a holder of the Dhamma, Wise, a disciple of the Buddha; Desiring knowledge of the Dhamma, One should associate with such a one. 1034. One of much learning, a holder of the Dhamma, A guardian of the treasury of the great sage; An eye for the whole world, Worthy of veneration is one of much learning. 1035. Delighting in the Dhamma, enjoying the Dhamma, Contemplating the Dhamma; A monk remembering the Dhamma, Does not decline from the true Dhamma. 1036. Heavy with stinginess towards the body, When declining, he does not rise up; For one greedy for bodily comfort, Whence the ease of a recluse? 1037. All directions do not shine, The doctrines do not appear to me; When the good friend has gone, It seems like darkness. 1038. For one whose companion has passed away, For one whose teacher has passed away; There is no such friend, As mindfulness directed to the body. 1039. Those who are old have passed away, I do not associate with the new ones; So today I meditate alone, Like a bird that has entered the rainy season. For seeing, having come forth, many from various countries; Do not hinder, O listeners, let them see my time. For seeing, having come forth, many from various countries; The Teacher makes room, the one with eyes does not hinder. For twenty-five years, while I was a trainee; No sensual thought arose, see the excellent nature of the Dhamma. For twenty-five years, while I was a trainee; No thought of ill-will arose, see the excellent nature of the Dhamma. For twenty-five years, I attended the Blessed One; With a body-action of loving-kindness, like an unfailing shadow. For twenty-five years, I attended the Blessed One; With a speech-action of loving-kindness, like an unfailing shadow. For twenty-five years, I attended the Blessed One; With a mind-action of loving-kindness, like an unfailing shadow. As the Buddha walked, I walked behind him; While the Dhamma was being taught, knowledge arose in me. I was one with work to do, a trainee with an unreached mind; And the Teacher's final passing, he who was compassionate to us. Then it was terrifying, then it was hair-raising; When the Fully Awakened One, endowed with all excellent qualities, had finally passed away. Much-learned, Dhamma-bearer, treasurer of the Great Seer; The eye of all the world, Ananda has passed away. Much-learned, Dhamma-bearer, treasurer of the Great Seer; The eye of all the world, dispeller of darkness in the gloom. He who was endowed with insight, mindful, and resolute, the sage; The elder who upheld the true Dhamma, Ananda, a mine of gems. The Teacher has been served by me, the Buddha's teaching has been done; The heavy burden has been laid down, there is now no more rebirth.
