The Chapter of Sixteen. The Verses of Agyasa Kondañña the Elder. 673. I am even more serene, having heard the Dhamma of great flavor; Dispassion is the Dhamma taught, without clinging to anything at all. 674. Many are the wonders in the world, upon this circle of the earth; They churn, I think, the thought, beautiful, connected with passion. 675. As dust stirred by the wind, subsides like a cloud; So do thoughts subside, when one sees with wisdom. 676. "All formations are impermanent," when one sees with wisdom; Then one turns away from suffering, this is the path to purity. 677. "All formations are suffering," when one sees with wisdom; Then one turns away from suffering, this is the path to purity. 678. "All phenomena are not-self," when one sees with wisdom; Then one turns away from suffering, this is the path to purity. 679. The elder who was awakened after the Buddha, Kondañña of keen exertion; Has abandoned birth and death, perfected in the holy life. 680. The flood-snare, the firm bolt, the mountain hard to break; Having cut the bolt and snare, having broken the hard-to-split rock; Crossed over, gone to the far shore, a meditator, he is freed from Mara's bonds. 681. A restless, fickle monk, relying on evil friends; Sinks in the great flood, struck down by the wave. 682. Not restless, not fickle, sagacious, with senses restrained; A good friend, intelligent, would be an ender of suffering. 683. Like a burnt log, thin, covered with veins; Moderate in food and drink, a person with an unbowed mind. 684. Afflicted by flies and mosquitoes, in the great forest wilderness; Like an elephant in battle, mindful, he should dwell there. 685. I do not delight in death... like a wage-earner seeking his wage. 686. I do not delight in death... fully aware and mindful. 687. The Teacher has been served by me... the craving for existence has been uprooted. 688. For whom the aims He who has gone forth, from home to homelessness; That goal has been attained by me, what is there for me with a co-resident? … The Elder Aññāsikoṇḍañño … 2. Udāyi Thera’s Verses 689. The Enlightened One, a human being, self-controlled, composed; Moving on the path of Brahma, delighting in the calming of the mind. 690. Whom humans venerate, the one who has gone beyond all phenomena; Even devas venerate him, thus have I heard from the Arahant. 691. Having transcended all fetters, come from the forest to the non-forest; Delighting in renunciation from sensual pleasures, released like gold from a rock. 692. Indeed, that Nāga shone forth, like Himavā among other mountain peaks; Among all those with the name Nāga, he is the true Nāga, unsurpassed. 693. I will praise the Nāga for you, for he commits no offense; Gentleness and non-violence, these are his two feet. 694. Mindfulness and clear comprehension, these are his other two legs; The great Nāga has faith as his hand, equanimity as his white tusks. 695. Mindfulness is his neck, wisdom his head, investigation is his contemplation of phenomena; Dwelling in the belly of Dhamma, solitude is his tail. 696. He, the meditator, delighting in breathing, well-composed internally; Walking, the Nāga is composed, standing, the Nāga is composed. 697. Lying down, the Nāga is composed, sitting, too, he is composed; Everywhere the Nāga is restrained, this is the Nāga’s accomplishment. 698. He eats what is blameless, he does not eat what is blameworthy; Having obtained food and clothing, avoiding accumulation. 699. Having cut all fetters, small and large bonds; Wherever he goes, he goes unattached. 700. Just as a white lotus, born in water, grows; It is not smeared by water, pure, fragrant, delightful. 701. Even so, the Buddha, born in the world, dwells in the world; He is not smeared by the world, like a lotus by water. 702. A great fire, blazing, subsides without fuel; And when the embers are extinguished, it is said to be Nibbuta (extinguished). 703. This is the meaning A declaration, a simile taught by the wise; The great Nāgas will understand the Nāga taught by the Nāga. 704. "Free from lust, free from hatred, Free from delusion, taintless; Abandoning the body, the Nāga, Will attain final Nibbāna, taintless." ... The Elder Udāyī .... The Sixteenth Section is concluded. Therein the summary – Koṇḍañña and Udāyī, Those two elders of great psychic power; In the sixteenth section, There are thirty-two verses.
