9. The Chapter of Nines 1. The Verses of Elder Bhūta 518. When the wise one sees suffering, old age, and death, where ordinary people are attached; having fully understood suffering, mindful, he meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 519. When the clinging that brings suffering, that carries a mass of suffering and proliferation, having abandoned craving, mindful, he meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 520. When the auspicious path, leading by two or four factors, the supreme path, purifying all defilements, having seen with wisdom, mindful, he meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 521. When the sorrowless, stainless, unconditioned, peaceful state, purifying all defilements, he develops, cutting the bonds of fetters, then he finds no higher delight. 522. When in the sky, the cloud-drum roars, with streams of rain everywhere on the bird-paths, and the monk, having gone to a mountain cave, meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 523. When by the banks of rivers, full of flowers, adorned with various forest garlands, sitting with a joyful mind, he meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 524. When in the deep night, in a deserted forest, while the sky pours rain, tusked beasts roar, and the monk, having gone to a mountain cave, meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 525. When having suppressed his own thoughts, having taken refuge in a mountain cave within the mountains, free from fear, free from barrenness, he meditates; then he finds no higher delight. 526. When happy, destroying defilements, barrenness, and sorrow, unhindered, without craving, without arrows, having utterly destroyed all defilements, he meditates; then he finds no higher delight. … Elder Bhūta…. The Chapter of Nines is finished. Therein is the summary – Elder Bhūta, the one who saw thus, the one, like a rhinoceros horn; In the Chapter of Nines, these verses are also nine.
