(16) "Might there be, monks, another way of rightly contemplating the pair?" If there were questioners, they should be told: "There might be." And how might there be? Monks, what for the world with its devas, with Mara, with Brahma, for the generation with recluses and brahmins, with devas and humans, is contemplated as "This is happiness," that for the Noble Ones is truly seen as "This is suffering" with right wisdom. This is one contemplation. Monks, what for the world with its devas... with devas and humans, is contemplated as "This is suffering," that for the Noble Ones is truly seen as "This is happiness" with right wisdom. This is the second contemplation. Monks, for a monk who thus rightly contemplates the pair, diligent, ardent, resolute, dwelling, one of two fruits is to be expected: full knowledge in this very life, or if there is a remainder of clinging, non-returning. This the Blessed One said. Having said this, the Fortunate One, the Teacher, spoke further: 764. Forms, sounds, tastes, smells, Touches, and mental phenomena, all of them; Desirable, lovely, and agreeable, As far as "existence" is spoken of. 765. For the world with its devas, These are considered happiness; Where these cease, That is considered suffering for them. 766. As happiness it is seen by the Noble Ones, The cessation of the existing body; This is contrary, To what the whole world sees. Thus. 767. “What others call happiness, That the Noble Ones call suffering; What others call suffering, That the Noble Ones know as happiness. 768. “See the Dhamma, hard to know, Wherein the ignorant are utterly confused; For those veiled, it is darkness, A blind gloom for those who do not see. 769. “But for the mindful, it is open, Like light for those who see; They do not understand it, though it’s near, Those who are not skilled in the Dhamma’s path. 770. “By those overcome by craving for existence, By those following the stream of existence; By those fallen under Mara’s sway, This Dhamma is not well understood. 771. “Who else but the Noble Ones, Is worthy to fully awaken to the state; That state, having rightly understood, They attain final Nibbāna, free from defilements.” This the Blessed One said. Delighted, those bhikkhus rejoiced in the Blessed One’s words. And while this exposition was being spoken, the minds of sixty bhikkhus were liberated from defilements, without clinging.
