The Third. 4. The Discourse on Times 63. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus have I heard – “There are these three times, monks. Which three? The past time, the future time, the present time – these, monks, are the three times.” The Blessed One spoke this meaning. In this regard, it is it is said: Beings perceive what is expressible, in what is expressible they are established; Not fully understanding what is expressible, they come under the yoke of death. But fully understanding what is expressible, one does not conceive of an expresser; Touched by liberation of mind, the unsurpassed state of peace. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I heard: "Monks, there are these three bad conducts. Which three? Bad bodily conduct, bad verbal conduct, bad mental conduct — these, monks, are the three bad conducts." The Blessed One said this meaning. And concerning this, it is said: Having done bad bodily conduct, and bad verbal conduct; Having done bad mental conduct, and whatever else is connected with defilement. Not having done wholesome deeds, having done much unwholesome; At the breaking up of the body, the unwise one, is reborn in hell. This too was said by the Blessed One, so I heard. The Fifth. 6. Discourse on Good Conduct 65. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I heard: "Monks, there are these three good conducts. Which three? This meaning too was declared by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Seventh. 8. The Discourse on Sagacity 67. This was declared by the Blessed One, declared by the Arahant, thus have I heard: "These three, monks, are sagacities. Which three? Sagacity of body, sagacity of speech, sagacity of mind – these, monks, are the three sagacities." This meaning the Blessed One declared. Therein this is said: "A sage in body, a sage in speech, a sage in mind, without taints; A sage, endowed with sagacity, they call one who has washed away evil." This meaning too was declared by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Eighth. 9. The First Discourse on Passion 68. This was declared by the Blessed One, declared by the Arahant, thus have I heard: "Whoever, monks, has not abandoned passion, has not abandoned hatred, has not abandoned delusion – this one, monks, is called 'bound by Mara, caught in Mara's snare, to be dealt with as the Evil One wishes.' Whoever, monks, has abandoned passion, has abandoned hatred, has abandoned delusion – this one, monks, is called 'unbound by Mara, released from Mara's snare, not to be dealt with as the Evil One wishes.'" This meaning the Blessed One declared. Therein this is said: "For whom passion and hatred, and ignorance are dispelled; That one, with developed self, a knower, become Brahma, a Tathagata; A Buddha, gone beyond enmity and fear, they call one who has abandoned all." This meaning too was declared by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Ninth. 10. The Second Discourse on Passion 69. This was declared by the Blessed One, declared by the Arahant, thus have I heard: "Whoever, monks, whether a monk or a b For a nun, or if passion is not abandoned, hatred is not abandoned, delusion is not abandoned – this, bhikkhus, is said: 'He has not crossed the ocean with its waves, with its ripples, with its whirlpools, with its monsters, with its demons.' But for whosoever, bhikkhus, for a bhikkhu or a bhikkhuni, passion is abandoned, hatred is abandoned, delusion is abandoned – this, bhikkhus, is said: 'He has crossed the ocean with its waves, with its ripples, with its whirlpools, with its monsters, with its demons, he has crossed over, gone to the far shore, and stands on dry land, a brahmin.'" The Blessed One spoke this meaning. And there, this is said: "He whose passion and hatred, And ignorance are dispelled; He has crossed this ocean, with its monsters and demons, With its fearful waves, hard to cross. Gone beyond attachments, abandoning death, without defilements, He has given up suffering, for no more rebirth; Having gone to rest, he cannot be measured, He has bewildered the king of death, so we say." This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, so I have heard. The Tenth. The Second Chapter is finished. Its summary: Merit, Eye, then Faculties, Path and Conduct, two Pure ones; Mind, then two Passions, Again they call the second chapter excellent. 3. The Third Chapter 1. The Discourse on Wrong View 70. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I have heard: "I have seen, bhikkhus, beings endowed with misconduct of body, endowed with misconduct of speech, endowed with misconduct of mind, revilers of the noble ones, holding wrong view, undertaking actions based on wrong view. Upon the breaking up of the body, after death, they are reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a downfall, hell. And there, this is said: "Having wrongly directed the mind, and having wrongly spoken words; Having wrongly performed deeds, by body, a person here. Little learned, a doer of demerit, with little life here; With the breaking up of the body, the unwise one, to hell he is reborn." This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard.
