Then the Blessed One, understanding this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance: "What use is a well, If waters are always there? Having cut off craving at the root, What should one seek?" The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on Utena 70. Thus have I heard: At one time the Blessed One was staying in Kosambī, at Ghositārāma. Now at that time, while King Utena was in his pleasure garden, his inner palace had burned down, and five hundred women, headed by Sāmāvatī, had died. Then many bhikkhus, having dressed in the morning, and taking their bowls and robes, entered Kosambī for alms. Having wandered for alms in Kosambī, after their meal, on their return from their alms-round, they approached the Blessed One; having approached, they paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Seated to one side, those bhikkhus said to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, while King Utena was in his pleasure garden, his inner palace had burned down, and five hundred women, headed by Sāmāvatī, had died. As for those female lay followers, venerable sir, what..." "What is their destiny in the next world?" "There are here, monks, female lay followers who are stream-enterers, there are once-returners, there are non-returners. All those, monks, female lay followers, have passed away fruitfully." Then indeed the Blessed One, having understood this matter, at that time uttered this inspired utterance: "The world is bound by delusion, it appears as if beautiful; The fool is bound by attachments, surrounded by darkness; It appears as if eternal, for one who truly sees, there is nothing (to cling to)." The Tenth. Its Summary: Two Bhaddiyas and two beings, Lakuṇḍaka, the destruction of craving; The destruction of proliferation and Kaccāna, And the well and Utena.
