The Hell Chapter 306. The liar goes to hell, And he who, having done, says "I did not do it." Both of them, after death, become equal, Base-deeded people in the other world. 307. Many wear the saffron robe, Evil-natured and unrestrained. Evil ones, by their evil deeds, They fall into hell. 308. Better to eat a glowing iron ball, Hot like a flame of fire, Than for an immoral, unrestrained person To eat the country's alms-food. 309. Four states a heedless man incurs, Who consorts with another's wife: Acquisition of demerit, no desired pleasure, Third, blame, and fourth, hell. 310. Acquisition of demerit and an evil destination, And brief pleasure of the frightened with the frightened; And the king inflicts a heavy punishment; Therefore, a man should not consort with another's wife. 311. Just as kusa grass, badly grasped, Cuts the hand itself; Asceticism badly handled Drags one to hell. 312. Whatever slack action, And whatever defiled vow, A wavering holy life, That is not of great fruit. 313. If one does, let him do it, Let him strive at it firmly. For a slack ascetic life Scatters more dust. 314. Better is an evil deed undone, For an evil deed torments afterwards. And better is a good deed done, Which, having done, one does not regret. 315. Just as a frontier city, Guarded inside and out; So should you guard yourselves. Let not the moment pass you by. For those who have missed the moment grieve, Consigned to hell. 316. They are ashamed of what is not shameful, They are not ashamed of what is shameful. Holding to wrong views, Beings go to a bad destination. 317. Seeing fear in what is not fearful, And seeing no fear in what is fearful. Holding to wrong views, Beings go to a bad destination. 318. Thinking fault in what is faultless, And seeing no fault in what is faulty. Holding to wrong views, Beings go to a bad destination. 319. And knowing what is faulty as faulty, And what is faultless as faultless; Rightly viewed... From non-intoxication, beings go to a good destination. The twenty-second chapter on Hell is concluded.
