6. The Chapter of the Wise 76. Like one who points out treasure, whom one sees as a fault-finder; A reproving speaker, a sagacious one, such a wise person should one attend; Attending such a one, it becomes better, not worse. 77. He should advise, he should instruct, and from what is unseemly he should restrain; To the good he is dear, to the bad he is not dear. 78. Do not associate with evil friends, do not associate with base men; Associate with good friends, associate with excellent men. 79. The one who delights in Dhamma sleeps happily, with a mind utterly serene; In the Dhamma proclaimed by the Noble Ones, the wise one ever rejoices. 80. Irrigators lead water, fletchers straighten arrows; Carpenters bend wood, the wise tame themselves. 81. As a solid rock, is not stirred by the wind; So the wise are not moved, by praise or blame. 82. Just as a deep lake, is clear and undisturbed; So the wise become serene, having heard the Dhamma. 83. Everywhere indeed good people renounce, the saints do not speak from desire for pleasures; Whether touched by happiness or by suffering, the wise do not show elation or dejection. 84. Not for one's own sake, nor for another's sake, one should not desire sons, nor wealth, nor a kingdom; One should not desire prosperity for oneself by unrighteous means, he should be virtuous, wise, and righteous. 85. Few are those among humans, who are people who reach the far shore; But this other populace, runs along this very bank. 86. And those who, in the well-proclaimed Dhamma, live in accordance with the Dhamma; Those people will reach the far shore, the realm of death, so difficult to cross. 87. Having abandoned the dark state, the wise one should cultivate the bright state; Having come from home to homelessness, in solitude where it is difficult to delight. 88. Therein he should desire delight, having abandoned sensual pleasures, having nothing; The wise one should purify himself, from mental defilements. 89. Those whose minds are well-cultivated, in the factors of enlightenment; In the giving up of attachment, un Those who delight in clinging; The radiant ones, whose defilements are destroyed, They are fully extinguished in the world.
