9. Discourse on Loving-Kindness 1. What should be done by one skilled in good, having attained the state of peace; Capable, upright, and very upright, easy to speak to, gentle, not conceited. 2. Contented and easily supported, with few duties and light in living; Calm in senses, discerning, not impudent, not greedy among families. 3. And let him not do any slight wrong, by which others, the wise, might blame him; May all beings be happy and safe, may all beings be happy in themselves. 4. Whatever living beings there are, trembling or firm, or those remaining without exception; Long or great, medium, short, small or large. 5. Seen or unseen, those who dwell far or near; Born or yet to be born, may all beings be happy in themselves. 6. Let no one deceive another, nor despise anyone anywhere; Through anger or ill-will, let him not wish suffering upon another. 7. Just as a mother would protect her only child with her life; Even so, towards all beings, let him cultivate an immeasurable mind. 8. And loving-kindness towards the entire world, let him cultivate an immeasurable mind; Upwards, downwards, and across, unhindered, without hatred, without enmity. 9. Standing, walking, sitting, or lying down, as long as he is free from drowsiness; He should maintain this mindfulness, this they say is the divine abiding here. 10. Not falling into wrong views, virtuous, endowed with insight; Having removed greed for sensual pleasures, he will surely not return to a womb again.
