3. The Chapter on the Monk Monks, a cowherd endowed with eleven factors is incapable of tending a herd of cattle and making it prosper. Which eleven? Here, monks, the cowherd: is not skilled in forms, is not skilled in characteristics, does not remove the flies, does not cover the wounds, does not make smoke, does not know the ford, does not know the watering place, does not know the path, is not skilled in pasture, milks without leaving any, and does not honor with extra reverence those bulls who are fathers of the herd, leaders of the herd. Monks, a cowherd endowed with these eleven factors is incapable of tending a herd of cattle and making it prosper.
