(22) 2. The Chapter on Asceticism 221. Endowed with ten qualities, monks, one is cast into hell as if brought there. With which ten? He is a killer of living beings, he is a taker of what is not given, he is a wrongdoer in sensual pleasures, he is a speaker of falsehood, he is a slanderer, he is a harsh speaker, he is a frivolous talker, he is covetous, he has ill will, he has wrong view – Endowed with these ten qualities, monks, one is cast into hell as if brought there. Endowed with ten qualities, monks, one is cast into heaven as if brought there. With which ten? He abstains from killing living beings, he abstains from taking what is not given, he abstains from wrongdoing in sensual pleasures, he abstains from false speech, he abstains from slanderous speech, he abstains from harsh speech, he abstains from frivolous talk, he is not covetous, he has no ill will, he has right view – Endowed with these ten qualities, monks, one is cast into heaven as if brought there. 222. Endowed with twenty qualities, monks, one is cast into hell as if brought there. With which twenty? He himself kills living beings, and he encourages others to kill living beings; he himself takes what is not given, and he encourages others to take what is not given; he himself is a wrongdoer in sensual pleasures, and he encourages others to wrongdoing in sensual pleasures; he himself speaks falsehood, and he encourages others to speak falsehood; he himself is a slanderer, and he encourages others to slanderous speech; he himself is a harsh speaker, and he encourages others to harsh speech; he himself is a frivolous talker, and he encourages others to frivolous talk; he himself is covetous, and he encourages others to covetousness; he himself has ill will, and he encourages others to ill will; he himself has wrong view, and he encourages others to wrong view – Endowed with these twenty, monks, endowed with qualities, as if brought and placed, thus in hell. "Monks, endowed with twenty qualities, as if brought and placed, thus in heaven. Which twenty? Oneself abstains from killing living beings, and encourages others to abstain from killing living beings; Oneself abstains from taking what is not given, and encourages others to abstain from taking what is not given; Oneself abstains from sexual misconduct, and encourages others to abstain from sexual misconduct; Oneself abstains from false speech, and encourages others to abstain from false speech; Oneself abstains from divisive speech, and encourages others to abstain from divisive speech; Oneself abstains from harsh speech, and encourages others to abstain from harsh speech; Oneself abstains from idle chatter, and encourages others to abstain from idle chatter; Oneself is not covetous, and encourages others to be not covetous; Oneself has a mind free from ill-will, and encourages others to be free from ill-will; Oneself has right view, and encourages others to have right view – indeed, monks, endowed with these twenty qualities, as if brought and placed, thus in heaven." 223. "Monks, endowed with thirty qualities, as if brought and placed, thus in hell. Which thirty? Oneself is a killer of living beings, and encourages others to kill living beings, and approves of killing living beings; Oneself is a taker of what is not given, and encourages others to take what is not given, and approves of taking what is not given; Oneself engages in sexual misconduct, and encourages others in sexual misconduct, and approves of sexual misconduct; Oneself engages in false speech, and encourages others in false speech, and approves of false speech; Oneself engages in divisive speech, and encourages others in divisive speech, and approves of divisive speech; Oneself and he is harsh in speech, and he encourages others to harsh speech, and he approves of harsh speech; and he is a frivolous talker himself, and he encourages others to frivolous talk, and he approves of frivolous talk; and he is covetous himself, and he encourages others to covetousness, and he approves of covetousness; and he has ill will himself, and he encourages others to ill will, and he approves of ill will; and he has wrong view himself, and he encourages others to wrong view, and he approves of wrong view – Monks, endowed with these thirty qualities, he is cast into hell as if brought there. “Monks, endowed with thirty qualities, he is cast into heaven as if brought there.
