(18) 3. Chapter on Good 1. Discourse on Good "Monks, I will teach you what is good and what is not good. Listen to it, pay careful attention; I will speak." "Yes, venerable sir," those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "And what, monks, is not good? Taking life, taking what is not given, sexual misconduct, false speech, slanderous speech, harsh speech, frivolous talk, covetousness, ill will, wrong view— this, monks, is called not good. "And what, monks, is good? Abstaining from taking life, abstaining from taking what is not given, abstaining from sexual misconduct, abstaining from false speech, abstaining from slanderous speech, abstaining from harsh speech, abstaining from frivolous talk, non-covetousness, non-ill will, right view— this, monks, is called good." The First. 2. Discourse on Noble Qualities "Monks, I will teach you noble qualities and ignoble qualities. Listen to it... And what, monks, are ignoble qualities? Taking life... wrong view— this, monks, is called ignoble qualities. "And what, monks, are noble qualities? Abstaining from taking life... right view— this, monks, is called noble qualities." The Second. 3. Discourse on Wholesome "Monks, I will teach you wholesome and unwholesome. Listen to it... And what, monks, is unwholesome? Taking life... wrong view— this, monks, is called unwholesome. "And what, monks, is wholesome? Abstaining from taking life... right view— this, monks, is called wholesome." The Third. 4. Discourse on Benefit "Monks, I will teach you what is beneficial and what is not beneficial. Listen to it... And what, monks, is not beneficial? Taking life... wrong view— this, monks, is called not beneficial. "And what, monks, is beneficial? Abstaining from taking life... right view— — this, monks, is called meaning. Fourth. 5. Dhamma Sutta Monks, I will teach you Dhamma and non-Dhamma. Listen to that… And what, monks, is non-Dhamma? Killing living beings… wrong view – this, monks, is called non-Dhamma. And what, monks, is Dhamma? Abstaining from killing living beings… right view – this, monks, is called Dhamma. Fifth. 6. Taints Sutta Monks, I will teach you Dhamma with taints and Dhamma without taints. Listen to that… And what, monks, is Dhamma with taints? Killing living beings… wrong view – this, monks, is called Dhamma with taints. And what, monks, is Dhamma without taints? Abstaining from killing living beings… right view – this, monks, is called Dhamma without taints. Sixth. 7. Blameworthy Sutta Monks, I will teach you blameworthy Dhamma and blameless Dhamma. Listen to that… And what, monks, is blameworthy Dhamma? Killing living beings… wrong view – this, monks, is called blameworthy Dhamma. And what, monks, is blameless Dhamma? Abstaining from killing living beings… right view – this, monks, is called blameless Dhamma. Seventh. 8. Torment Sutta Monks, I will teach you Dhamma that causes torment and Dhamma that causes no torment. Listen to that… And what, monks, is Dhamma that causes torment? Killing living beings… wrong view – this, monks, is called Dhamma that causes torment. And what, monks, is Dhamma that causes no torment? Abstaining from killing living beings… right view – this, monks, is called Dhamma that causes no torment. Eighth. 9. Accumulation Sutta Monks, I will teach you Dhamma leading to accumulation and Dhamma leading to dissipation. Listen to that… And what, monks, is Dhamma leading to accumulation? Killing living beings… wrong view – this, monks, is called Dhamma leading to accumulation. And what, monks, is the diminishing dharma? Abstinence from taking life, and so on, right view— this, monks, is called the diminishing dharma. The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on Suffering's Origin 187. Monks, I will teach you the dharma that leads to suffering and the dharma that leads to happiness. Listen to it… And what, monks, is the dharma that leads to suffering? Taking life, and so on, wrong view— this, monks, is called the dharma that leads to suffering. And what, monks, is the dharma that leads to happiness? Abstinence from taking life, and so on, right view— this, monks, is called the dharma that leads to happiness. The Tenth. 11. The Discourse on Results 188. Monks, I will teach you the dharma with a result of suffering and the dharma with a result of happiness. Listen to it… And what, monks, is the dharma with a result of suffering? Taking life, and so on, wrong view— this, monks, is called the dharma with a result of suffering. And what, monks, is the dharma with a result of happiness? Abstinence from taking life, and so on, right view— this, monks, is called the dharma with a result of happiness. The Eleventh. The Third Chapter on Good.
