The Good Chapter 1. The Discourse on the Good "Monks, I will teach you the good and the not good. Listen to that, pay careful attention; I will speak." "Yes, venerable sir," those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "And what, monks, is not good? Wrong view, wrong intention, wrong speech, wrong action, wrong livelihood, wrong effort, wrong mindfulness, wrong concentration, wrong knowledge, wrong liberation – this, monks, is called not good." "And what, monks, is good? Right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration, right knowledge, right liberation – this, monks, is called good." The First. 2. The Discourse on Noble Qualities "Monks, I will teach you noble qualities and ignoble qualities. Listen to that... and so on... And what, monks, are ignoble qualities? Wrong view... and so on... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called ignoble qualities." "And what, monks, are noble qualities? Right view... and so on... right liberation – this, monks, is called noble qualities." The Second. 3. The Discourse on the Unwholesome "Monks, I will teach you the unwholesome and the wholesome. Listen to that... and so on... And what, monks, is unwholesome? Wrong view... and so on... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called unwholesome." "And what, monks, is wholesome? Right view... and so on... right liberation – this, monks, is called wholesome." The Third. 4. The Discourse on the Beneficial "Monks, I will teach you the beneficial and the not beneficial. Listen to that... and so on... And what, monks, is not beneficial? Wrong view... and so on... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called not beneficial." "And what, monks, is beneficial? Right view... and so on... right liberation – this, monks, is called beneficial." The Fourth. 5. The Discourse on the Dhamma And I will teach you, monks, the Dhamma and the Adhamma. Listen to that... And what, monks, is Adhamma? Wrong view... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called Adhamma. And what, monks, is Dhamma? Right view... right liberation – this, monks, is called Dhamma. The Fifth. 6. Sāsava Sutta And I will teach you, monks, the Dhamma with taints and the Dhamma without taints. Listen to that... And what, monks, is the Dhamma with taints? Wrong view... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called the Dhamma with taints. And what, monks, is the Dhamma without taints? Right view... right liberation – this, monks, is called the Dhamma without taints. The Sixth. 7. Sāvajja Sutta And I will teach you, monks, the blameworthy Dhamma and the blameless Dhamma. Listen to that... And what, monks, is the blameworthy Dhamma? Wrong view... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called the blameworthy Dhamma. And what, monks, is the blameless Dhamma? Right view... right liberation – this, monks, is called the blameless Dhamma. The Seventh. 8. Tapanīya Sutta And I will teach you, monks, the tormenting Dhamma and the non-tormenting Dhamma. Listen to that... And what, monks, is the tormenting Dhamma? Wrong view... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called the tormenting Dhamma. And what, monks, is the non-tormenting Dhamma? Right view... right liberation – this, monks, is called the non-tormenting Dhamma. The Eighth. 9. Ācayagāmi Sutta And I will teach you, monks, the Dhamma leading to accumulation and the Dhamma leading to dispersion. Listen to that... And what, monks, is the Dhamma leading to accumulation? Wrong view... wrong liberation – this, monks, is called the Dhamma leading to accumulation. And what, monks, is the Dhamma leading to dispersion? Right view... right liberation – this, monks, is called the Dhamma leading to dispersion. a teaching leading to decline.” The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on the Origin of Suffering 143. “Monks, I will teach you the teaching that leads to suffering and the teaching that leads to happiness. Listen to that… And what, monks, is the teaching that leads to suffering? Wrong view… …wrong liberation. This is called, monks, the teaching that leads to suffering. And what, monks, is the teaching that leads to happiness? Right view… …right liberation. This is called, monks, the teaching that leads to happiness.” The Tenth. 11. The Discourse on the Result of Suffering 144. “Monks, I will teach you the teaching with a result of suffering and the teaching with a result of happiness. Listen to that… And what, monks, is the teaching with a result of suffering? Wrong view… …wrong liberation. This is called, monks, the teaching with a result of suffering. And what, monks, is the teaching with a result of happiness? Right view… …right liberation. This is called, monks, the teaching with a result of happiness.” The Eleventh. The Fourth Chapter on Good.
