(9) 4. The Chapter on Bases of Spiritual Power 1. The Training Sutta 83. "Monks, there are these five weaknesses in training. Which five? Taking life... ...indulgence in fermented and distilled liquors, which are a basis for heedlessness – these, monks, are the five weaknesses in training. "For the abandoning of these five weaknesses in training, monks, four bases of spiritual power are to be developed. Which four? Here, monks, a monk develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to desire and volitional formations of exertion. Concentration due to energy... Concentration due to mind... Concentration due to investigation and volitional formations of exertion. For the abandoning of these five weaknesses in training, monks, these four bases of spiritual power are to be developed." The First. 10. The Fetters of the Mind Sutta 92. "Monks, there are these five fetters of the mind. Which five? Here, monks, a monk is not free from lust for sensual pleasures... ...these, monks, are the five fetters of the mind. "For the abandoning of these five fetters of the mind, monks, these four bases of spiritual power are to be developed. Which four? Here, monks, a monk develops the basis of spiritual power endowed with concentration due to desire and volitional formations of exertion. Concentration due to energy... Concentration due to mind... Concentration due to investigation and volitional formations of exertion. For the abandoning of these five fetters of the mind, monks, these four bases of spiritual power are to be developed." The Tenth. The Chapter on Bases of Spiritual Power, the Fourth. Just as the foundations of mindfulness, And the four right exertions; And the four bases of spiritual power, So too are they to be connected.
