then there is the possibility that my mind would leap into, would become confident in, would settle in, would become liberated in the cessation of perception and feeling, seeing it as peaceful.’ So, Ananda, at a later time, having seen the danger in the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, I made much of it; and having attained the benefit of the cessation of perception and feeling, I cultivated it. For me, Ananda, my mind leaped into, became confident in, settled in, became liberated in the cessation of perception and feeling, seeing it as peaceful. So, Ananda, having completely transcended the dimension of neither perception nor non-perception, I entered and dwell in the cessation of perception and feeling, and having seen with wisdom, my defilements came to an end. ‘‘As long as, Ananda, I had not thus entered and emerged from these nine progressive attainments both forwards and backwards, so long, Ananda, I did not claim in the world with its devas, Mara, and Brahma, among the generation of ascetics and brahmins, devas and humans, the unsurpassed I declared, 'I am fully enlightened with perfect enlightenment.' And when I, Ānanda, both attained and emerged from these nine progressive attainments of dwelling in this direct and reverse order, then I, Ānanda, in the world with its devas, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, with its recluses and brahmins, with its devas and humans, declared, 'I am fully enlightened with unsurpassed perfect enlightenment.' And knowledge and vision arose in me: 'My liberation of mind is unshakeable, this is my last birth, now there is no more renewed existence.'' The Tenth. The Great Chapter, the Fourth.
