Just as, monks, the great ocean slopes down gradually, inclines gradually, descends gradually, not with an abrupt drop; even so, monks, in this Dhamma-Vinaya there is gradual training, gradual practice, gradual path, not an abrupt penetration of wisdom. And that, monks, in this Dhamma-Vinaya there is gradual training, gradual practice, gradual path, not an abrupt penetration of wisdom; this, monks, is the first wonderful, amazing quality in this Dhamma-Vinaya, which seeing again and again monks delight in this Dhamma-Vinaya… Just as, monks, the great ocean is the abode of great beings; therein are these beings – timi, timiṅgala, timirapiṅgala, asuras, nāgas, gandhabbas; beings of a hundred leagues in body dwell in the great ocean… beings of five hundred leagues in body (dwell there); even so, monks, this Dhamma-Vinaya is the abode of great beings. Therein are these beings – the stream-enterer, one practicing for the realization of the fruit of stream-entry… the Arahant, one practicing for Arahantship. And that, monks, this Dhamma-Vinaya is the abode of great beings; therein are these beings – the stream-enterer, one practicing for the realization of the fruit of stream-entry… the Arahant, one practicing for Arahantship; this, monks, is the eighth wonderful, amazing quality in this Dhamma-Vinaya, which seeing again and again monks delight in this Dhamma-Vinaya.
