Chapter on Ascetics 1. On a Bhikkhu Bhikkhus, because seven things are broken, one is a bhikkhu. Which seven? Self-view is broken, doubt is broken, adherence to rites and rituals is broken, lust is broken, hatred is broken, delusion is broken, conceit is broken. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are broken, one is a bhikkhu. The First. 2. On an Ascetic Bhikkhus, because seven things are calmed, one is an ascetic. Which seven? Self-view is calmed, doubt is calmed, adherence to rites and rituals is calmed, lust is calmed, hatred is calmed, delusion is calmed, conceit is calmed. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are calmed, one is an ascetic. The Second. 3. On a Brahmin Bhikkhus, because seven things are cast out, one is a brahmin. Which seven? Self-view is cast out, doubt is cast out, adherence to rites and rituals is cast out, lust is cast out, hatred is cast out, delusion is cast out, conceit is cast out. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are cast out, one is a brahmin. The Third. 4. On a Sottiya Bhikkhus, because seven things have flowed out, one is a sottiya. Which seven? Self-view has flowed out, doubt has flowed out, adherence to rites and rituals has flowed out, lust has flowed out, hatred has flowed out, delusion has flowed out, conceit has flowed out. Bhikkhus, because these seven things have flowed out, one is a sottiya. The Fourth. 5. On a Nhātaka Bhikkhus, because seven things are bathed away, one is a nhātaka. Which seven? Self-view is bathed away, doubt is bathed away, adherence to rites and rituals is bathed away, lust is bathed away, hatred is bathed away, delusion is bathed away, conceit is bathed away. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are bathed away, one is a nhātaka. The Fifth. 6. On a Vedagū Bhikkhus, because seven things are known, one is a vedagū. Which seven? Self-view is known, doubt is known, adherence to rites and rituals is known, lust is known, hatred is known, delusion is known, conceit is known. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are known, one is a vedagū. The Sixth. 7. On a Noble One Bhikkhus, because seven things are far away, one is a noble one. Which seven? Self-view is far away, doubt is far away, adherence to rites and rituals is far away, lust is far away, hatred is far away, delusion is far away, conceit is far away. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are far away, one is a noble one. The Seventh. 8. On an Arahant Because they are far away, one is an arahant. Which seven? Self-view is far away, doubt is far away, adherence to rites and rituals is far away, lust is far away, hatred is far away, delusion is far away, conceit is far away. Bhikkhus, because these seven things are far away, one is an arahant. The Eighth. 9. On Ignoble Qualities Bhikkhus, there are these seven ignoble qualities. Which seven? One is faithless, one is shameless, one is without moral dread, one has little learning, one is lazy, one is forgetful, one is unwise. Bhikkhus, these are the seven ignoble qualities. The Ninth. 10. On Noble Qualities Bhikkhus, there are these seven noble qualities... Monks, there are seven true qualities. Which seven? He is faithful, He is conscientious, He is scrupulous, He is learned, He is energetic, He is mindful, He is wise. These, monks, are the seven true qualities. The tenth. The Chapter on Ascetics, the ninth. Its summary: A monk, an ascetic, a brahmin, A well-versed one, and a purified one; A master of knowledge, a noble one, an Arahant, Bad qualities, and good qualities.
