He is not skilled in maintaining concentration. He is not skilled in emerging from concentration. And he acts without respect, and he acts without persistence, and he acts without suitability. Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu endowed with these six qualities is incapab able to attain strength in concentration. “Endowed with six qualities, monks, a bhikkhu is able to attain strength in concentration. Which six? Here, monks, a bhikkhu is skilled in entering concentration, is skilled in maintaining concentration, is skilled in emerging from concentration, and acts earnestly, and acts persistently, and acts suitably. Indeed, monks, endowed with these six qualities, a bhikkhu is able to attain strength in concentration.” The Eighth. 9. The Discourse on the First Jhāna 73. “Not abandoning six qualities, monks, one is unable to dwell having attained the first jhāna. Which six? Sensual desire, ill-will, sloth and torpor, restlessness and remorse, doubt. And the danger in sensual pleasures is not well seen by him as it truly is, with right wisdom. Indeed, monks, not abandoning these six qualities, one is unable to dwell having attained the first jhāna. “Abandoning six qualities, monks, one is able to dwell having attained the first jhāna.
