The teacher Jotīpāla taught the Dhamma for companionship with the Brahma-world. What do you think, righteous brahmin? If someone, with a corrupted mind, Were to abuse and revile These six teachers, founders of sects, Free from passion for sensual pleasures, Surrounded by many hundreds, With their assemblies of disciples, Would he generate much demerit? Yes, venerable sir. Indeed, righteous brahmin, If someone, with a corrupted mind, Were to abuse and revile These six teachers, founders of sects, Free from passion for sensual pleasures, Surrounded by many hundreds, With their assemblies of disciples, He would generate much demerit. If someone, with a corrupted mind, Abuses and reviles A single person endowed with right view, He generates even more demerit than that. For what reason? I do not speak of such patience Outside of this (teaching), righteous brahmin, As I do among my fellow practitioners. Therefore, righteous brahmin, You should train thus: 'Our minds will not be corrupted Towards our fellow practitioners.' Thus, righteous brahmin, You should train. Sunetto and Mūgapakkha, And Aranemi the brahmin; Kuddālaka was a teacher, And Hatthipāla the young man. Jotipāla and Govinda, He was a royal chaplain; Non-violent in the past, Six famous teachers. Free from defilements, Released through compassion, Gone beyond the fetters of sensual desire; Having dispassion for sensual lust, They went to the Brahma world. There were disciples of theirs, Many hundreds as well; Free from defilements, Released through compassion, Gone beyond the fetters of sensual desire; Having dispassion for sensual lust, They went to the Brahma world. These external sages, Free from passion, composed; With corrupted mental intention, If a person reviles them; Such a person generates much demerit. And if one who is endowed with right view, A monk, a disciple of the Buddha; The person who, with corrupted thought, reviles (him); That person generates Much more demerit than that. Do not approach A person of bad character. One who has abandoned The basis of views, This person is called The seventh individual Of the noble Sangha. One whose passion for sensual pleasures is not gone, Whose five faculties are soft; Faith, mindfulness, and effort, Tranquility and insight. Having assailed such a monk, One is harmed first; Having harmed oneself, Afterwards one harms another. And whoever protects oneself, For him, the external is protected; Therefore, one should protect oneself, A wise person is always unharmed. The fifth chapter, Dhammika.
