(19) 4. The Wilderness Chapter 1. Discourse on Wilderness Dwellers 181. “Monks, there are five kinds of wilderness dwellers. Which five? One is a wilderness dweller out of dullness, out of delusion. One is a wilderness dweller with evil wishes, overcome by desire. One is a wilderness dweller out of madness, out of mental distraction. One is a wilderness dweller thinking, ‘It is praised by the Buddhas, by the disciples of the Buddhas.’ One is a wilderness dweller relying on fewness of wishes, relying on contentment, relying on effacement, relying on seclusion, relying on this as the goal. These, monks, are the five kinds of wilderness dwellers. Among these five kinds of wilderness dwellers, the one who is a wilderness dweller relying on fewness of wishes, relying on contentment, relying on effacement, relying on seclusion, relying on this as the goal—this one among these five kinds of wilderness dwellers is the foremost, the best, the chief, the highest, the most excellent. “Just as, monks, from a cow comes milk; from milk, curds; from curds, fresh butter; from fresh butter, ghee; from ghee, the cream of ghee—the cream of ghee is declared to be the foremost there. Even so, monks, among these five kinds of wilderness dwellers, the one who is a wilderness dweller relying on fewness of wishes, relying on contentment, relying on effacement, relying on seclusion, relying on this as the goal—this one among these five kinds of wilderness dwellers is the foremost, the best, the chief, the highest, the most excellent.” The First. 2. Discourse on Rag-robe Wearers 182. “Monks, there are five kinds of rag-robe wearers. Which five? One is a rag-robe wearer out of dullness, out of delusion… …one is a rag-robe wearer relying on this as the goal. These, monks, are the five kinds of rag-robe wearers.” The Second. 3. Discourse on Tree-root Dwellers 183. “Monks, there are five kinds of tree-root dwellers. Which five? One is a tree-root dweller out of dullness, out of delusion… One is a tree-dweller due to dullness, delusion... ...one is a tree-dweller relying on this very purpose. One is an alms-food-eater thinking, 'It is praised by Buddhas and their disciples.' One is an alms-food-eater relying on fewness of wishes, relying on contentment, relying on effacement, relying on seclusion, relying on this very purpose. These, monks, are the five alms-food-eaters. Among these five alms-food-eaters, monks, the one who is an alms-food-eater relying on fewness of wishes, relying on contentment, relying on effacement, relying on seclusion, relying on this very purpose— this one among these five alms-food-eaters is the foremost, the best, the release, the highest, the most excellent. Just as, monks, from a cow, milk; from milk, curds; from curds, butter; from butter, ghee; from ghee, cream of ghee— the cream of ghee is declared the foremost there. Even so, monks... , among these five alms-food eaters from the bowl, whichever alms-food eater from the bowl, relying solely on fewness of wishes, relying solely on contentment, relying solely on effacement, relying solely on seclusion, relying solely on this goal, this one among these five alms-food eaters from the bowl is the foremost, the best, the chief, the highest, the most excellent. The Tenth. The Wilderness Chapter, the Fourth. Its Summary – Wilderness, Robe, Tree, Charnel ground, Open-air dweller; Sitting, Not lying down, One-session eater, And the later-alms-food eater.
