(9) 4. The Elder Chapter 1. On Things that Arouse Passion 81. “Endowed with five qualities, bhikkhus, an elder bhikkhu is unloved by his fellow practitioners, displeasing, unrespected, and not to be cultivated. With which five? He is impassioned by things that arouse passion, he is hateful towards things that arouse hatred, he is deluded by things that arouse delusion, he is angered by things that arouse anger, he is intoxicated by things that arouse intoxication— Endowed with these five qualities, bhikkhus, an elder bhikkhu is unloved by his fellow practitioners, displeasing, unrespected, and not to be cultivated. “Endowed with five qualities, bhikkhus, an elder bhikkhu is loved by his fellow practitioners, pleasing, respected, and to be cultivated. With which five? He is not free from passion, he is not free from hatred, he is not free from delusion, and he is a denigrator, and he is a rival— Endowed with these five qualities, bhikkhus, an elder bhikkhu is unloved by his fellow practitioners, displeasing, unrespected, and not to be cultivated. “Endowed with five qualities, bhikkhus, an elder bhikkhu is loved by his fellow practitioners, pleasing, respected, and to be cultivated. With which five? On Being Deceitful 83 Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with five qualities, is disliked by his fellow practitioners, and displeasing, and not respected, and not to be developed. Which five? He is a deceiver, and a talker, and a fortune-teller, and a disparager, and one who seeks gain with gain. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with these five qualities, is disliked by his fellow practitioners, and displeasing, and not respected, and not to be developed. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with five qualities, is liked by his fellow practitioners, and pleasing, and respected, and to be developed. Which five? He is not a deceiver, and not a talker, and not a fortune-teller, and not a disparager, and does not seek gain with gain. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with these five qualities, is liked by his fellow practitioners, and pleasing, and respected, and to be developed. The Third. 4. The Discourse on the Faithless 84. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with five qualities, is disliked by his fellow practitioners, and displeasing, and not respected, and not to be developed. Which five? He is faithless, and shameless, and without dread, and lazy, and unwise. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with these five qualities, is disliked by his fellow practitioners, and displeasing, and not respected, and not to be developed. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with five qualities, is liked by his fellow practitioners, and pleasing, and respected, and to be developed. Which five? He is faithful, and conscientious, and dread-filled, and energetic, and wise. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with these five qualities, is liked by his fellow practitioners, and pleasing, and respected, and to be developed. The Fourth. 5. The Discourse on the Impatient 85. Monks, a senior bhikkhu, endowed with five qualities... A senior monk, endowed with five qualities, is unloved by his fellow monks, is displeasing, is not respected, is not to be cultivated. With which five? He is impatient with forms, he is impatient with sounds, he is impatient with smells, he is impatient with tastes, he is impatient with tactile objects. With these five qualities, monks, a senior monk is unloved by his fellow monks, is displeasing, is not respected, is not to be cultivated. A senior monk, endowed with five qualities, is loved by his fellow monks, is pleasing, is respected, is to be cultivated. With which five? He is patient with forms, he is patient with sounds, he is patient with smells, he is patient with tastes, he is patient with tactile objects. With these five qualities, monks, a senior monk is loved by his fellow monks, is pleasing, is respected, is to be cultivated. The fifth. 6. Discourse on Attaining Analytical Knowledge A senior monk, endowed with five qualities, is loved by his fellow monks, is pleasing, is respected, is to be cultivated. With which five? He has attained analytical knowledge of meaning, he has attained analytical knowledge of the Dhamma, he has attained analytical knowledge of language, he has attained analytical knowledge of ready wit, and regarding the various tasks of his fellow monks, he is skillful, not lazy, endowed with an investigative approach for those tasks, able to do them, able to arrange them. With these five qualities, monks, a senior monk is loved by his fellow monks, is pleasing, is respected, is to be cultivated. The sixth. 7. Discourse on the Virtuous A senior monk, endowed with five qualities, is loved by his fellow monks, is pleasing, is respected, is to be cultivated. With which five? He is virtuous, he dwells restrained by the Pātimokkha restraint, perfect in conduct and resort, seeing danger in the slightest faults, he undertakes and trains in the training rules; he is learned, a preserver of what he has heard, what he has heard a collection of those teachings which declare the holy life beautiful in the beginning, beautiful in the middle, beautiful in the end, with meaning and with letter, entirely complete and purified; such teachings are for him well-heard, retained, familiar by word, examined by mind, and well-penetrated by view; he has good speech, good utterance, endowed with a refined voice, clear, unhesitating, and able to convey the meaning; he is a willing recipient, an unburdened recipient, an unhindered recipient of the four jhānas, which are of the higher mind, and are a pleasant abiding in this very life; with the destruction of the taints, he abides, having realized for himself with direct knowledge in this very life the taintless liberation of mind, and liberation by wisdom. Monks, a senior bhikkhu endowed with these five qualities is dear, agreeable, respected, and worthy of veneration by his fellow practitioners. The Seventh. 8. The Discourse on the Elder 88. "Monks, a senior bhikkhu endowed with five qualities practices for the harm of many people, for the unhappiness of many people, for the disadvantage, harm, and suffering of many people, of devas and humans. Which five? He is an elder, long-experienced, long-ordained; he is well-known, famous, surrounded by many people, both householders and monastics; he is a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, medicinal requisites for the sick; he is well-learned, a retainer of what he has heard, a collector of what he has heard, those teachings which declare the holy life beautiful in the beginning, beautiful in the middle, beautiful in the end, with meaning and with letter, entirely complete and purified; such teachings are for him well-heard, retained, familiar by word, examined by mind, but not well-penetrated by view; he is of wrong view, of perverted vision; he makes many people fall away from the true Dhamma and establish themselves in the false Dhamma. Because this elder bhikkhu is long-experienced and long-ordained, people follow his view. The elder monk is well-known, renowned, surrounded by many householders and monastics, and people follow his example. The elder monk is a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, medicines for the sick, and requisites, and people follow his example. The elder monk is learned, a holder of the teachings, a collector of the teachings, and people follow his example. Monks, an elder monk endowed with these five qualities acts for the harm of many, for the unhappiness of many, for the disadvantage, harm, and suffering of many people, of devas and humans. Monks, an elder monk endowed with five qualities acts for the welfare of many, for the happiness of many, for the advantage, welfare, and happiness of many people, of devas and humans. Which five? He is an elder, long-experienced, long-ordained. He is well-known, renowned, surrounded by many householders and monastics. He is a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, medicines for the sick, and requisites. He is learned, a holder of the teachings, a collector of the teachings, those teachings that are good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, with meaning and with letter, proclaiming the utterly complete and purified holy life. Such teachings are much heard by him, held, familiarized by speech, examined by mind, and well-penetrated by view. He has right view, an undistorted vision. He raises many people from the bad Dhamma and establishes them in the good Dhamma. The elder monk is long-experienced, long-ordained, and people follow his example. The elder monk is well-known, renowned, surrounded by many householders and monastics, and people follow his example. The elder monk is a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, medicines for the sick, and requisites, and people follow his example. The elder monk is learned, a holder of the teachings, a collector of the teachings, and people follow his example.
