"Those free from lust, free from hatred, free from delusion, taintless, fields of merit in the world, resort to such a man. "They teach him the Dhamma, the dispeller of all suffering, by understanding which Dhamma here, he attains final Nibbāna, taintless." The eighth. 9. Son Sutta "There are, bhikkhus, five reasons, seeing which, parents wish for a son to be born in their family. Which five? 'He will support us when we are old; he will do our work; our family lineage will endure; he will inherit the legacy; or else he will offer alms to the departed, to those who have passed away.' These, bhikkhus, are the five reasons, seeing which, parents wish for a son to be born in their family." "Seeing five reasons, the wise wish for a son: 'He will support us when we are old, he will do our work. "'The family lineage will long endure, he will inherit the legacy; or else he will offer alms to the departed. "Seeing these reasons, the wise wish for a son. Therefore, good and righteous people, grateful and thankful, "Support their parents, remembering what was done before. They do their duties for them, just as those who did good for them. "Obedient, supporting his parents, not letting the family lineage decline, faithful, endowed with virtue, a son is praiseworthy." The ninth. 10. Great Sāl Tree Son Sutta "Leaning on the Himālaya, the king of mountains, great sāl trees grow with five kinds of growth. Which five? They grow in branches, leaves, and foliage; they grow in bark; they grow with bark; they grow with flakes; they grow with sapwood; they grow with heartwood. Monks, relying on the Himālaya, the king of mountains, great sal trees grow with these five growths. Even so, monks, relying on a faithful son of good family, the inner circle grows with five growths. With which five? They grow with faith; they grow with virtue; they grow with learning; they grow with generosity; they grow with wisdom. Monks, relying on a faithful son of good family, the inner circle grows with these five growths. Just as a rocky mountain, in the great forest wilderness; relying on it, the trees, those forest lords, grow. Even so, this faithful son of good family, endowed with virtue; relying on him, grow children, wives, and relatives; ministers, groups of kinsmen, and those who depend on him for their livelihood. Those who are discerning, seeing his virtue, his generosity, and his good conduct, imitate the virtue of that virtuous one. Having practiced this Dhamma, the path leading to a good destination; rejoicing in the world of devas, they delight, desiring pleasures. The tenth. The Sumanā Chapter, the Fourth.
