8. The Section on Lust 1. Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness 274. For the direct knowledge of lust, monks, four things are to be developed. Which four? Here, monks, a monk dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure concerning the world; in feelings, contemplating feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure concerning the world; in mind, contemplating mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure concerning the world; in phenomena, contemplating phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. For the direct knowledge of lust, monks, these four things are to be developed. First. 2. Discourse on Right Exertions 275. For the direct knowledge of lust, monks, four things are to be developed. Which four? Here, monks, a monk generates desire for the non-arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states, he endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives; for the abandoning of arisen evil unwholesome states, he endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives; for the arising of unarisen wholesome states, he endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives; and for the maintenance, non-disappearance, increase, growth, development, and perfection of arisen wholesome states, he generates desire, he endeavors, arouses energy, exerts his mind, and strives. For the direct knowledge of lust, monks, these four things are to be developed. Second. 3. Discourse on the Bases of Power 276. For the direct knowledge of lust, monks, four things are to be developed. Which four? Here, monks, a monk develops the base of power endowed with concentration due to desire and volitional formations of exertion; the base of power endowed with concentration due to energy and volitional formations of exertion; the base of power endowed with concentration due to mind and volitional formations of exertion; the base of power endowed with concentration due to investigation and volitional formations of exertion. For the direct knowledge of lust, monks, these four things are to be developed. Third. 4-30. Discourses on Full Understanding, etc. 277-303. For the full understanding of lust, monks, for its complete destruction, for its abandoning, for its destruction, for its fading away, for its dispassion, for its cessation, for its relinquishment, for its giving up, four things are to be developed, just as before. Discourses on the Direct Knowledge of Hatred, etc. For hatred, for delusion, for anger, for resentment, for denigration, for rivalry, for jealousy, for avarice, for deceit, for craftiness, for obstinacy, for presumption, for conceit, for excessive pride, for intoxication, for heedlessness— For direct knowledge, for full comprehension, for utter destruction, for abandonment, for destruction, for vanishing, for dispassion, for cessation, for relinquishment, for complete renunciation— These four qualities should be developed.
