(22) 2. The Chapter on Assemblies 1. Discourse on Assemblies 211. “There are these four, monks, who corrupt an assembly. Which four? A monk, monks, who is immoral, of evil nature, corrupts an assembly. A nun, monks, who is immoral, of evil nature, corrupts an assembly. A lay follower, monks, who is immoral, of evil nature, corrupts an assembly. A laywoman, monks, who is immoral, of evil nature, corrupts an assembly. These, monks, are the four who corrupt an assembly. “There are these four, monks, who adorn an assembly. Which four? A monk, monks, who is virtuous, of good nature, adorns an assembly. A nun, monks, who is virtuous, of good nature, adorns an assembly. A lay follower, monks, who is virtuous, of good nature, adorns an assembly. A laywoman, monks, who is virtuous, of good nature, adorns an assembly. These, monks, are the four who adorn an assembly.” The first. 2. With misconduct in body, misconduct in speech, misconduct in mind, and wrong view. Endowed with these four qualities, monks, one is cast into hell as if brought there. “Endowed with four qualities, monks, one is cast into heaven as if brought there. With which four? With good conduct in body, good conduct in speech, good conduct in mind, and right view. Endowed with these four qualities, monks, one is cast into heaven as if brought there.” The second. 3. Discourse on Ungratefulness 213. “Endowed with four qualities, monks, one is cast into hell as if brought there. With which four? With misconduct in body, misconduct in speech, misconduct in mind, and ungratefulness, not knowing what has been done. Endowed with these four qualities, monks, one is cast into hell as if brought there. “Endowed with four qualities, monks, endowed with these, he is placed in heaven as if brought there. With which four? By good conduct of body, by good conduct of speech, by good conduct of mind, by gratitude and thankfulness. Indeed, monks, endowed with these four qualities, he is placed in heaven as if brought there. The third. 4. Discourse on the Killer of Living Beings ... he is a killer of living beings, he is a taker of what is not given, he is a wrongdoer in sensual pleasures, he is a speaker of falsehood. ... he abstains from killing living beings, he abstains from taking what is not given, he abstains from wrong conduct in sensual pleasures, he abstains from false speech. The ninth. 10. Discourse on Immorality "Monks, endowed with four qualities, as if brought is cast into hell, just as if brought there. By which four? He is faithless, he is immoral, he is lazy, he is unwise. Indeed, monks, endowed with these four qualities, he is cast into hell, just as if brought there. Monks, endowed with four qualities, he is cast into heaven, just as if brought there. By which four? He is faithful, he is virtuous, he is energetic, he is wise. Indeed, monks, endowed with these four qualities, he is cast into heaven, just as if brought there. The Tenth. The Chapter on Assemblies, the Second. Its Summary – Assembly, view, ingratitude, killing living beings, also two paths; Two ways of speaking are declared, shamelessness, and with unwisdom.
