These four, monks, are lights. Which four? Moonlight, sunlight, firelight, the light of wisdom – These, monks, are the four lights. Of these four lights, monks, the light of wisdom is the foremost. These four, monks, are splendors. Which four? Moonlight splendor, sunlight splendor, fire splendor, the splendor of wisdom – These, monks, are the four splendors. Of these four splendors, monks, the splendor of wisdom is the foremost. These four, monks, are illuminations. Which four? Moonlight illumination, sunlight illumination, fire illumination, the illumination of wisdom – These, monks, are the four illuminations. Of these four illuminations, monks, the illumination of wisdom is the foremost. These four, monks, are radiances. Which four? Moonlight radiance, sunlight radiance, fire radiance, the radiance of wisdom – These, monks, are the four radiances. Of these four radiances, monks, the radiance of wisdom is the foremost. These four, monks, are lamps. Which four? Moonlight lamp, sunlight lamp, fire lamp, the lamp of wisdom – These, monks, are the four lamps. Of these four lamps, monks, the lamp of wisdom is the foremost. These four, monks, are opportune times. Which four? Listening to the Dhamma at the right time, Discussing the Dhamma at the right time, Reflecting at the right time, Practicing insight at the right time – These, monks, are the four opportune times. These four, monks, are opportune times, rightly developed, rightly practiced, anup gradually they reach the destruction of the taints. Which four? Listening to Dhamma in due time, discussing Dhamma in due time, reflecting in due time, insight in due time – these, monks, are the four times, rightly developed, rightly practiced, gradually they reach the destruction of the taints. Just as, monks, when a heavy rain falls on a mountain top, that water flowing according to the slope fills the mountain caves, crevices, and ravines; the mountain caves, crevices, and ravines being full, fill the small pools; the small pools being full, fill the great pools; the great pools being full, fill the small rivers; the small rivers being full, fill the great rivers; the great rivers being full, fill the ocean. Even so, monks, these four times, rightly developed, rightly practiced, gradually they reach the destruction of the taints. The Seventh. 8. Discourse on Bad Conduct 148. "These, monks, are four verbal misconducts. Which four? False speech, slanderous speech, harsh speech, frivolous talk – these, monks, are the four verbal misconducts." The Eighth. 9. Discourse on Good Conduct 149. "These, monks, are four verbal good conducts. Which four? Truthful speech, non-slanderous speech, gentle speech, meaningful speech – these, monks, are the four verbal good conducts." The Ninth. 10. Discourse on the Essence 150.
