(14) 4. Chapter on Persons 1. The Discourse on Fetters 131. "These four, monks, are persons existing, found in the world. Which four? Here, monks, for a certain person, the lower fetters are not abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth are not abandoned, the fetters leading to existence are not abandoned. But here, monks, for a certain person, the lower fetters are abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth are not abandoned, the fetters leading to existence are not abandoned. But here, monks, for a certain person, the lower fetters are abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth are abandoned, the fetters leading to existence are not abandoned. But here, monks, for a certain person, the lower fetters are abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth are abandoned, the fetters leading to existence are abandoned. For which person, monks, are the lower fetters not abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth not abandoned, the fetters leading to existence not abandoned? For the once-returner. For this person, monks, the lower fetters are not abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth are not abandoned, the fetters leading to existence are not abandoned. For which person, monks, are the lower fetters abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth not abandoned, the fetters leading to existence not abandoned? For the upstream-goer, the one going to Akaniṭṭha. For this person, monks, the lower fetters are abandoned, the fetters leading to rebirth are not abandoned, the fetters leading to existence are not abandoned. For which person, monks, are the lower... The lower fetters are abandoned, The fetters for obtaining rebirth are abandoned, The fetters for obtaining existence are not abandoned? He will attain Nibbāna in the interim. Indeed, bhikkhus, for this person, the lower fetters are abandoned, the fetters for obtaining rebirth are abandoned, the fetters for obtaining existence are not abandoned. "For which person, bhikkhus, are the lower fetters abandoned, the fetters for obtaining rebirth abandoned, and the fetters for obtaining existence abandoned?" "For the Arahant." "Indeed, bhikkhus, for this person, the lower fetters are abandoned, the fetters for obtaining rebirth are abandoned, and the fetters for obtaining existence are abandoned. These four persons, bhikkhus, exist, are found in the world." The First. 2. The Discourse on Readiness of Speech "These four persons, bhikkhus, exist, are found in the world. Which four? One with appropriate readiness of speech, not with fluent readiness of speech; one with fluent readiness of speech, not with appropriate readiness of speech; one with both appropriate and fluent readiness of speech; one with neither appropriate nor fluent readiness of speech – these four persons, bhikkhus, exist, are found in the world." The Second. 3. The Discourse on the Quick-Witted "These four persons, bhikkhus, exist, are found in the world. Which four? The quick to comprehend, the one who comprehends after explanation, the one who needs to be led, the one whose highest aim is the words – these four persons, bhikkhus, exist, are found in the world." The Third. 4. The Discourse on the Fruit of Exertion "These four persons, bhikkhus, exist, are found in the world. Which four? One who lives on the fruit of exertion, not on the fruit of kamma; one who lives on the fruit of kamma, not on the fruit of exertion; one who lives on both the fruit of exertion and the fruit of kamma; one who lives on neither the fruit of exertion nor the fruit of kamma – these, bhikkhus, have, four persons existing, found in the world. The Fourth. 5. The Discourse on the Blameworthy 135. These four persons, monks, exist, are found in the world. Which four? The blameworthy, the mostly blameworthy, the little blameworthy, the blameless. And how, monks, is a person blameworthy? Here, monks, a certain person is endowed with blameworthy bodily action, is endowed with blameworthy verbal action, is endowed with blameworthy mental action. Thus, monks, a person is blameworthy. And how, monks, is a person mostly blameworthy? Here, monks, a certain person is endowed mostly with blameworthy bodily action, little with blameless; is endowed mostly with blameworthy verbal action, little with blameless; is endowed mostly with blameworthy mental action, little with blameless. Thus, monks, a person is mostly blameworthy. And how, monks, is a person little blameworthy? Here, monks, a certain person is endowed mostly with blameless bodily action, little with blameworthy; is endowed mostly with blameless verbal action, little with blameworthy; is endowed mostly with blameless mental action, little with blameworthy. Thus, monks, a person is little blameworthy. And how, monks, is a person blameless? Here, monks, a certain person is endowed with blameless bodily action, is endowed with blameless verbal action, is endowed with blameless mental action. Thus, monks, a person is blameless. These four persons, monks, exist, are found in the world. The Fifth. 6. The First Discourse on Virtue 136. These four persons, monks, exist, are found in the world. Which four? Thus, monks, a person is not physically secluded but mentally secluded. And how, monks, is a person not physically secluded and not mentally secluded? Here, monks, a certain person does not frequent remote forest wilderness dwellings. He there thinks thoughts of sensual desire, thinks thoughts of ill-will, thinks thoughts of harm. Thus, monks, a person is not physically secluded and not mentally secluded. And how, monks, is a person physically secluded and mentally secluded? Here, monks, a certain person frequents remote forest wilderness dwellings. He there thinks thoughts of renunciation, thinks thoughts of non-ill-will, thinks thoughts of non-harm. Thus, monks, a person is physically secluded and mentally secluded. These, monks, are the four persons existing, found in the world. The Eighth. 9. The Discourse on the Dhamma Speaker 139. These four, monks, are Dhamma speakers. Which four? Here, monks, a certain Dhamma speaker speaks little and what is not connected; and his audience is not skilled in what is connected and not connected. Such a Dhamma speaker, monks, is indeed a Dhamma speaker to such an audience. is reckoned as. Here, monks, some Dhamma speaker speaks little and relevant; and his audience is skilled in what is relevant and irrelevant. Such a Dhamma speaker, monks, by such an audience is reckoned as a Dhamma speaker. Here, monks, some Dhamma speaker speaks much and irrelevant; and his audience is not skilled in what is relevant and irrelevant. Such a Dhamma speaker, monks, by such an audience is reckoned as a Dhamma speaker. Here, monks, some Dhamma speaker speaks much and relevant; and his audience is skilled in what is relevant and irrelevant. Such a Dhamma speaker, monks, by such an audience is reckoned as a Dhamma speaker. These, monks, are the four Dhamma speakers. The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on Disputants 140. "These four, monks, are disputants. Which four? There is, monks, a disputant who exhausts the meaning, but not the phrasing; there is, monks, a disputant who exhausts the phrasing, but not the meaning; there is, monks, a disputant who exhausts both the meaning and the phrasing; there is, monks, a disputant who exhausts neither the meaning nor the phrasing. These, monks, are the four disputants. It is impossible, monks, it cannot happen that one endowed with the four analytical knowledges
