And how, monks, is a person with a weak core and a strong retinue? Here, monks, a certain person is immoral, of bad character; but their retinue is virtuous, of good character. Thus, monks, a person is with a weak core and a strong retinue. Just as, monks, that tree is with weak wood and a strong retinue; so, monks, I say this person is like that. And how, monks, is a person with a strong core and a weak retinue? Here, monks, a certain person is virtuous, of good character; but their retinue is immoral, of bad character. Thus, monks, a person is with a strong core and a weak retinue. Just as, monks, that tree is with strong wood and a weak retinue; so, monks, I say this person is like that. And how, monks, is a person with a strong core and a strong retinue? Here, monks, a certain person is virtuous, of good character; and their retinue is virtuous, of good character. Thus, monks, a person is with a strong core and a strong retinue. is strong, with a strong retinue. Just as, monks, that tree is strong, with a strong retinue; so too, monks, I say this person is. These, monks, are the four persons like trees, existing, found in the world. The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on Vipers 110. These four, monks, are vipers. Which four? One whose venom comes quickly, but is not deadly venomous, one who is deadly venomous, but whose venom does not come quickly, one whose venom comes quickly and is deadly venomous, one whose venom neither comes quickly nor is deadly venomous – these, monks, are the four vipers. Just so, monks, there are four persons like vipers, existing, found in the world. Which four? One whose venom comes quickly, but is not deadly venomous, one who is deadly venomous, but whose venom does not come quickly, one whose venom comes quickly and is deadly venomous, one whose venom neither comes quickly nor is deadly venomous. Just as, monks, that viper is one whose venom comes quickly... with swift poison and with dreadful poison; such a person, monks, I declare to be like this. “And how, monks, is a person neither with swift poison nor with dreadful poison? Here, monks, a certain person does not frequently get angry. And his anger does not persist for a long time. Thus indeed, monks, is a person neither with swift poison nor with dreadful poison. Just as that snake, monks, is neither with swift poison nor with dreadful poison; such a person, monks, I declare to be like this. These indeed, monks, are the four persons like snakes, existing, found in the world.” The Tenth. The Chapter on Clouds, the First.
