those do not arise much for him. He is free from affliction. Of the four jhānas, pertaining to the higher mind, a pleasant abiding in this very life, he is a gainer at will, a gainer without difficulty, without trouble. With the destruction of the taints, the untainted liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, in this very life, having realized it for himself by direct knowledge, he abides therein. Thus, bhikkhus, a person among recluses is a recluse of refined nature. If, bhikkhus, one were to rightly say, 'A recluse of refined nature among recluses,' it is of me, bhikkhus, that one would rightly say, 'A recluse of refined nature among recluses.' For I, bhikkhus, mostly use robes when invited, little when uninvited; mostly use almsfood when invited, little when uninvited; mostly use lodging when invited, little when uninvited; mostly use requisites for the sick and medicine when invited, little when uninvited. And with those bhikkhus with whom I dwell, they mostly act towards me with pleasant bodily deeds, little with unpleasant ones; mostly with pleasant verbal deeds, little with unpleasant ones; mostly with pleasant mental deeds, little with unpleasant ones; they offer mostly pleasant gifts, little unpleasant ones. And those feelings, whether arisen from bile, or arisen from phlegm, or arisen from wind, or from a combination, or born of seasonal change, or born of improper care, or from assault, or born of kamma's ripening, those do not arise much for me. I am free from affliction. Of the four jhānas, pertaining to the higher mind... I obtain at will, without difficulty, without trouble, the pleasant abidings of mind in this very life. With the destruction of the taints, having realized for myself by direct knowledge the untainted liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, in this very life, I abide therein. “If, bhikkhus, one were to rightly say, ‘Among recluses, a recluse most refined,’ it is of me, bhikkhus, that one would rightly say, ‘Among recluses, a recluse most refined.’ These four persons, bhikkhus, are found existing in the world.” The Seventh. 8. The Fetters Sutta “These four persons, bhikkhus, are found existing in the world. Which four? The Immovable Recluse, the White Lotus Recluse, the Lotus Recluse, the Recluse Most Refined among recluses. “And how, bhikkhus, is a person an Immovable Recluse? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, with the destruction of the three fetters, is a stream-enterer, no longer subject to falling into lower states, certain of liberation, bound for enlightenment. Thus, bhikkhus, is a person an Immovable Recluse. “And how, bhikkhus, is a person a White Lotus Recluse? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, with the destruction of the three fetters, and with the attenuation of lust, hatred, and delusion, is a once-returner, who, having come to this world just one more time, makes an end of suffering. Thus, bhikkhus, is a person a White Lotus Recluse. “And how, bhikkhus, is a person a Lotus Recluse? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, with the destruction of the five lower fetters, is an apparitional rebirth, one who attains final Nibbāna there, not liable to return from that world. Thus, bhikkhus, is a person a Lotus Recluse. “And how, bhikkhus, is a person a Recluse Most Refined among recluses? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, with the destruction of the taints, having realized for himself by direct knowledge the untainted liberation of mind, liberation by wisdom, in this very life, abides therein. Thus, bhikkhus, is a person a Recluse Most Refined among recluses. These, bhikkhus... Monks, these four persons exist, are found in the world. The Eighth. 9. Discourse on Right View 89. These four persons, monks, exist, are found in the world. Which four? The Immovable Ascetic, the Lotus Ascetic, the Water-lily Ascetic, the Delicate Ascetic among ascetics. And how, monks, is a person an immovable ascetic? Here, monks, a monk has right view, has right intention, has right speech, has right action, has right livelihood, has right effort, has right mindfulness, has right concentration. Thus, monks, is a person an immovable ascetic. And how, monks, is a person a lotus ascetic? Here, monks, a monk has right view, has right intention, has right speech, has right action, has right livelihood, has right effort, has right mindfulness, has right concentration, has right knowledge, has right liberation, but does not dwell having touched the eight liberations with the body. Thus, monks, is a person a lotus ascetic. And how, monks, is a person a water-lily ascetic? Here, monks, a monk has right view... and so on... has right liberation, and dwells having touched the eight liberations with the body. Thus, monks, is a person a water-lily ascetic. And how, monks, is a person a delicate ascetic among ascetics? Here, monks, a monk mostly uses robes when requested, little when not requested... and so on... Indeed, monks, if one were to rightly say 'a delicate ascetic among ascetics', it is of me, monks, that one would rightly say 'a delicate ascetic among ascetics'. These four persons, monks, exist, are found in the world. The Ninth. 10. Discourse on Aggregates 90. These four persons, monks, exist, are found Are in the world. Which are the four? The unshakable recluse, The white lotus recluse, The red lotus recluse, The most delicate recluse among recluses. And how, monks, is a person an unshakable recluse? Here, monks, a monk is a learner, not yet attained in mind, dwelling, aspiring for the unsurpassed security from bondage. Thus, monks, is a person an unshakable recluse. And how, monks, is a person a white lotus recluse? Thus, monks, is a person a white lotus recluse. And how, monks, is a person a red lotus recluse? Here, monks, a monk dwells observing the rise and fall in the five aggregates of clinging – ‘Such is form, such is the origin of form, such is the passing away of form; such is feeling…and so on…such is perception…and so on…such are formations…and so on…such is consciousness, such is the origin of consciousness, such is the passing away of consciousness’; and he dwells having touched the eight liberations with his body. Thus, monks, is a person a red lotus recluse. And how, monks, is a person the most delicate recluse among recluses? Here, monks, a monk mostly uses robes that are requested, rarely those not requested…and so on… He, monks, rightly speaking, should be called the most delicate recluse among recluses.
