the Tathāgata would pervade the great three-thousandfold world-system with light. When those beings perceive that light, then the Tathāgata would make a sound, he would make his voice heard. Thus, Ānanda, the Tathāgata could make his voice heard throughout the great three-thousandfold world-system, as far as he wishes.” When this was said, Venerable Ānanda said this: “It is indeed my gain, it is indeed well-obtained by me, that my Teacher is of such great power, of such great might!” When this was said, Venerable Udāyī said this to Venerable Ānanda: “What is it to you, friend Ānanda, if your Teacher is of such great power, of such great might?” When this was said, the Blessed One said this to Venerable Udāyī: “Do not say so, Udāyī. Not so, Udāyi. If, Udāyi, Ānanda, not yet free from passion, were to die, by that clarity of mind, he would rule as king of devas seven times, and rule as a great king in this very Jambudīpa seven times.
