Here, monks, the monk does not diligently attend to the sign of concentration in the morning, does not diligently attend to the sign of concentration at midday, does not diligently attend to the sign of concentration in the evening. The Second Merchant Discourse 20. Endowed with three factors, bhikkhus, a merchant soon attains greatness and abundance in wealth. Which three? Here, bhikkhus, a merchant is discerning, skillful, and well-supported. And how, bhikkhus, is a merchant discerning? Here, bhikkhus, a merchant knows his goods: 'This merchandise, bought for this much, selling for this much, will have this much capital, and this much profit.' That is how, bhikkhus, a merchant is discerning. And how, bhikkhus, is a merchant skillful? Here, bhikkhus, a merchant is skilled in buying and selling his goods. That is how, bhikkhus, a merchant is skillful. And how, bhikkhus, is a merchant well-supported? Here, bhikkhus, those householders or householders' sons who are rich, of great wealth, of great possessions, they know this merchant: 'This venerable merchant... one who has eyes, is capable, and able to support his wife and children, and to give to us from time to time.’ They approach him with wealth: ‘Here, good merchant, take this wealth, support your wife and children, and give to us from time to time.’ Thus, monks, a merchant is endowed with support. With these three factors, monks, a merchant soon attains greatness and abundance in wealth. In the same way, monks, a monk endowed with three qualities soon attains greatness and abundance in wholesome states. With which three? Here, monks, a monk has eyes, is capable, and is endowed with support. And how, monks, does a monk have eyes? Here, monks, a monk understands ‘this is suffering’ as it really is, he understands ‘this is the origin of suffering’ as it really is, he understands ‘this is the cessation of suffering’ as it really is, he understands ‘this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering’ as it really is. Thus, monks, a monk has eyes. And how, monks, is a monk capable? Here, monks, a monk dwells with aroused energy for the abandoning of unwholesome states and for the acquisition of wholesome states; he is strong, firm in his endeavor, not laying down the burden in wholesome states. Thus, monks, a monk is capable. And how, monks, is a monk endowed with support? Here, monks, those monks who are learned, who have preserved the traditions, who are masters of the Dhamma, masters of the Vinaya, masters of the summaries, he approaches them from time to time and questions them, and asks them: ‘Venerable sir, how is this? What is the meaning of this?’ And those venerable ones reveal what was unrevealed, make plain what was not plain, and dispel his doubt regarding various doubtful points of the Dhamma. Thus, monks, a monk is endowed with support. is endowed. Monks, a bhikkhu endowed with these three qualities not long after attains greatness and abundance in wholesome qualities. Tenth.
