3. The Section on Discipline 201. “For two purposes, monks, the Tathāgata has laid down a training rule for disciples. Which two? For the good order of the Sangha, for the well-being of the Sangha… For the suppression of unruly individuals, for the comfortable living of conscientious monks… For the restraint of defilements in this very life, for the prevention of defilements in future lives… For the restraint of dangers in this very life, for the prevention of dangers in future lives… For the restraint of faults in this very life, for the prevention of faults in future lives… For the restraint of fears in this very life, for the prevention of fears in future lives… For the restraint of unwholesome states in this very life, for the prevention of unwholesome states in future lives… For the compassion towards householders, for the cutting off of the support of evil-wishing monks… For the gaining of faith by the unfaithful, for the increase of faith by the faithful… For the establishment of the True Dhamma, for the upholding of the Vinaya. For the Saṅgha's well-being, for the Saṅgha's comfort… For the suppression of unruly individuals, for the comfortable living of scrupulous monks… For the restraint of defilements in this present life, for the prevention of defilements in future lives… For the restraint of hostilities in this present life, for the prevention of hostilities in future lives… For the restraint of faults in this present life, for the prevention of faults in future lives… For the restraint of fears in this present life, for the prevention of fears in future lives… For the restraint of unwholesome states in this present life, for the prevention of unwholesome states in future lives… For compassion towards laypeople, for cutting off the support of monks with evil wishes… For inspiring faith in those without it, for increasing faith in those who have it… For the establishment of the True Dhamma, for the upholding of the Vinaya. These two purposes, monks, having considered, by the Tathāgata, for the disciples, the rule of covering with grass was laid down. The Vinaya repetition is finished.
