The Chapter on One Person 170. “One person, monks, appearing in the world, appears for the welfare of many, for the happiness of many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, for the benefit, for the happiness of gods and humans. Which one person? The Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. This one person, monks, appearing in the world, appears for the welfare of many, for the happiness of many, out of compassion for the world, for the good, for the benefit, for the happiness of gods and humans.” 171. “The appearance of one person, monks, is rare in the world. Of which one person? Of the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. The appearance of this one person, monks, is rare in the world.” 172. “One person, monks, appearing in the world, appears as a wondrous human being. Which one person? The Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. This one person, monks, appearing in the world, appears as a wondrous human being.” 173. “The passing away of one person, monks, is a cause for sorrow for many people. Of which one person? Of the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. The passing away of this one person, monks, is a cause for sorrow for many people.” 174. “One person, monks, appearing in the world, appears as one without a second, without a companion, incomparable, unequalled, without a counterpart, without an opposing person, peerless, supremely peerless, chief of two-footed beings. Which one person? The Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One. This one person, monks, appearing in the world, appears as one without a second, without a companion, incomparable, unequalled, without a counterpart, without an opposing person, peerless, supremely peerless, chief of two-footed beings.” 175-186. “With the appearance of one person, monks, there is the appearance of a great eye, there is the appearance of a great light, there is the appearance of a great radiance, there is the appearance of the six unsurpassed things, there is the realization of the four analytical knowledges, there is penetration of many elements, there is penetration of various elements, there is realization of the fruit of knowledge and liberation, there is realization of the fruit of stream-entry, there is realization of the fruit of once-returning, there is realization of the fruit of non-returning, there is realization of the fruit of arahantship. Of which one person? Of the Tathāgata, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. Indeed, monks, with the appearance of this one person, there is the appearance of a great eye, there is the appearance of a great light, there is the appearance of a great radiance, there is the appearance of the six unsurpassed things, there is the realization of the four analytical knowledges, there is penetration of many elements, there is penetration of various elements, there is realization of the fruit of knowledge and liberation, there is realization of the fruit of stream-entry, there is realization of the fruit of once-returning, there is realization of the fruit of non-returning, there is realization of the fruit of arahantship. 187. "Monks, I do not see any other single person who, the unsurpassed Wheel of Dhamma set in motion by the Tathāgata, rightly continues to roll it on, as does Sāriputta, monks.
