The Chapter on Heedlessness, etc. 81. This growth, monks, is insignificant, that is, growth in fame. This is the foremost, monks, of growths, that is, growth in wisdom. Therefore, monks, you should train yourselves thus: ‘We will grow in wisdom.’ Thus, monks, you should train yourselves. First. 82. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great harm as does, monks, heedlessness. Heedlessness, monks, leads to great harm. Second. 83. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great benefit as does, monks, heedfulness. Heedfulness, monks, leads to great benefit. Third. 84. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great harm as does, monks, laziness. Laziness, monks, leads to great harm. Fourth. 85. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great benefit as does, monks, the arousal of energy. The arousal of energy, monks, leads to great benefit. Fifth. 86. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great harm as does, monks, great desire. Great desire, monks, leads to great harm. Sixth. 87. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great benefit as does, monks, little desire. Little desire, monks, leads to great benefit. Seventh. 88. I do not, monks, perceive any other single quality that thus leads to great harm as does, monks, discontent. Discontent, monks, leads to great harm. Eighth. 89. Monks, I do not see any other single quality that leads to such great benefit as this, monks, contentment. Contentment, monks, leads to great benefit. The Ninth. 90. Monks, I do not see any other single quality that leads to such great harm as this, monks, lack of clear comprehension. Lack of clear comprehension, monks, leads to great harm. The Twelfth. 93. Monks, I do not see any other single quality that leads to such great benefit as this, monks, clear comprehension. Clear comprehension, monks, leads to great benefit. The Thirteenth. 94. Monks, I do not see any other single quality that leads to such great harm as this, monks, bad companionship. Bad companionship, monks, leads to great harm. The Fourteenth. 95. Monks, I do not see any other single quality that leads to such great benefit as this, monks, good companionship. Good companionship, monks, leads to great benefit. The Fifteenth. 96. Monks, I do not see any other single quality that leads to such great harm as this, monks, devotion to unwholesome qualities, non-devotion to wholesome qualities. Devotion, monks, Indeed, of unwholesome states, non-application to wholesome states leads to great harm. Sixteenth. “I do not see, monks, any other single thing that thus leads to great benefit as this, monks: application to wholesome states, non-application to unwholesome states.
