"Bhikkhus, I do not see any other single quality by which unarisen wholesome states arise, or arisen unwholesome states decline, as this, bhikkhus, is good friendship. For one with good friends, bhikkhus, unarisen wholesome states arise, and arisen unwholesome states decline." The first. 72. "Bhikkhus, I do not see any other single quality by which unarisen unwholesome states arise, or arisen wholesome states decline, as this, bhikkhus, is devotion to unwholesome states, and non-devotion to wholesome states. Through devotion to unwholesome states, bhikkhus, and non-devotion to wholesome states, unarisen unwholesome states arise, and arisen wholesome states decline." The second. 73. "Bhikkhus, I do not see any other single quality by which unarisen wholesome states arise, or arisen unwholesome states decline, as this, bhikkhus, is devotion to wholesome states, and non-devotion to unwholesome states. For one attending unwisely, bhikkhus, unarisen factors of awakening do not arise, and arisen factors of awakening do not reach full development." The fourth. 75. "Bhikkhus, I do not see any other single quality by which unarisen factors of awakening arise, or arisen factors of awakening reach full development, as this, bhikkhus, is wise attention." Attention. When one attends carefully, monks, unarisen factors of awakening arise, and arisen factors of awakening go to the fulfillment of development. The Fifth. 76. This, monks, is a small loss, that is, the loss of relatives. This, monks, is the worst of losses, that is, the loss of wisdom. The Sixth. 77. This, monks, is a small gain, that is, the gain of relatives. This, monks, is the foremost of gains, that is, the gain of wisdom. Therefore, monks, you should train thus: ‘We will grow in the growth of wisdom.’ Thus, monks, you should train. The Seventh. 78. This, monks, is a small loss, that is, the loss of wealth. This, monks, is the worst of losses, that is, the loss of wisdom. The Eighth. 79. This, monks, is a small gain, that is, the gain of wealth. This, monks, is the foremost of gains, that is, the gain of wisdom. Therefore, monks, you should train thus: ‘We will grow in the growth of wisdom.’ Thus, monks, you should train. The Ninth. 80.
