What, then, Sāriputta, is the stream?" "This Noble Eightfold Path, venerable sir, is the stream, namely: Right view, Right intention, Right speech, Right action, Right livelihood, Right effort, Right mindfulness, Right concentration." "Excellent, excellent, Sāriputta! This Noble Eightfold Path, Sāriputta, is the stream, namely: Right view... ...Right concentration." "'Stream-enterer, stream-enterer' it is said here, Sāriputta. "Excellent, excellent, Sāriputta! Whoever, Sāriputta, is endowed with this Noble Eightfold Path, he is called a stream-enterer. This venerable one, of such a name, of such a clan." Fifth. 6. The Carpenter Sutta 1002. At Sāvatthī. Now at that time, many bhikkhus were making robes for the Blessed One, thinking: "When the Blessed One has finished his robes, he will set out on a wandering tour after three months." Now at that time, Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters, were staying in Sādhuka for some business. Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters, heard: "Indeed, many bhikkhus are making robes for the Blessed One, thinking: 'When the Blessed One has finished his robes, he will set out on a wandering tour after three months.'" Then Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters, stationed a man on the road, saying: "Friend, when you see the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One, approaching, then inform us." you should announce it.” That man, having stood for two or three days, saw the Blessed One coming from afar. Having seen him, he approached Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters; having approached them, he said to Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters: “Here, sirs, comes the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Awakened One. Now is the time you deem fit.” Then Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters, approached the Blessed One; having approached and saluted the Blessed One, they followed him, walking behind him. Then the Blessed One turned aside from the road and approached a certain tree root; having approached, he sat down on the seat prepared for him. Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters, having saluted the Blessed One, sat down to one side. Seated to one side, Isidatta and Purāṇa, the carpenters, said this to the Blessed One: “When we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One: ‘He will set out on tour from Sāvatthī to the Kosalans,’ at that time there is discontent for us, there is sorrow: ‘The Blessed One will be far from us.’ But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One: ‘He has set out on tour from Sāvatthī to the Kosalans,’ at that time there is discontent for us, there is sorrow: ‘The Blessed One is far from us.’ ” “But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One: ‘He will set out on tour from the Kosalans to the Mallans,’ at that time there is discontent for us, there is sorrow: ‘The Blessed One will be far from us.’ But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One: ‘He has set out on tour from the Kosalans to the Mallans,’ at that time there is discontent for us, there is sorrow: ‘The Blessed One is far from us.’ ” “But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One: ‘He will set out on tour from the Mallans to the Vajjians,’ at that time there is discontent for us, there is sorrow: ‘The Blessed One will be far from us.’ But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One: ‘He has set out from the Mallans to the Vajj to Kāsī gone on tour, there is for us at that time dissatisfaction, there is sorrow – 'far from us is the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'will go on tour from Vajjī to Kāsī' – there is for us at that time dissatisfaction, there is sorrow – 'far from us will be the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'has gone on tour from Vajjī to Kāsī' – there is for us at that time dissatisfaction, there is sorrow – 'far from us is the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'will go on tour from Kāsī to Magadha' – there is for us at that time dissatisfaction, there is sorrow – 'far from us will be the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'has gone on tour from Kāsī to Magadha' – there is for us at that time no small dissatisfaction, there is no small sorrow – 'far from us is the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'will go on tour from Magadha to Kāsī' – there is for us at that time satisfaction, there is joy – 'near to us will be the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'has gone on tour from Magadha to Kāsī' – there is for us at that time satisfaction, there is joy – 'near to us is the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'will go on tour from Kāsī to Vajjī' – there is for us at that time satisfaction, there is joy – 'near to us will be the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'has gone on tour from Kāsī to Vajjī' – there is for us at that time satisfaction, there is joy – 'near to us is the Blessed One.' But when we, venerable sir, hear the Blessed One – 'will go on tour from Vajjī to Malla' – there is for us at that time satisfaction, there is joy. – 'The Blessed One will be near us.' But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One – 'that he has set out on tour from the Vajjians to the Mallas,' at that time there is delight for us, there is joy – 'The Blessed One is near us.' But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One – 'that he will set out on tour from the Mallas to Kosala,' at that time there is delight for us, there is joy – 'The Blessed One will be near us.' But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One – 'that he has set out on tour from the Mallas to Kosala,' at that time there is delight for us, there is joy – 'The Blessed One is near us.' But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One – 'that he will set out on tour from Kosala to Sāvatthī,' at that time there is delight for us, there is joy – 'The Blessed One will be near us.' But when we, venerable sir, hear of the Blessed One – 'that he is dwelling in Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park,' at that time there is not a little delight for us, there is not a little joy – 'The Blessed One is near us.' 'Therefore, householders, the household life is confining, a path of dust; the going forth is open air. It is enough for you, householders, for diligence.' 'Indeed, venerable sir, there is for us another confinement, more confining and more reckoned as confinement than this confinement.' 'What then, householders, is that other confinement, more confining and more reckoned as confinement than this confinement?' 'Here, venerable sir, when King Pasenadi of Kosala desires to go out to the pleasure garden, having prepared those elephants that are the riding elephants of King Pasenadi of Kosala, we make those wives of King Pasenadi of Kosala, who are dear and pleasing, sit one in front, one behind. Indeed, venerable sir, those sisters have such a fragrance, just as if a perfume casket were being opened at that very moment, as that r adorned with the perfumes of royal maidens. And, venerable sir, the touch of those sisters' bodies is like that of a cotton tuft or a kapok tuft, as befits royal maidens who are delicately reared. At that time, venerable sir, the Nāga must be protected, those sisters must be protected, and oneself must be protected. We do not, venerable sir, recall having generated an evil thought towards those sisters. This, venerable sir, is for us another constraint more constraining and more truly a constraint than that constraint." "Therefore, householders, the household life is a constraint, a path of dust; the homeless life is the open air. And it is enough for you, householders, to be heedful. A noble disciple, householders, endowed with four qualities, is a stream-enterer, not subject to falling into states of woe, certain of liberation, bound for enlightenment. "Which four? Here, householders, a noble disciple is endowed with unwavering faith in the Buddha: 'Indeed, that Blessed One is... (as before) ... teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' In the Dhamma... (as before) ... in the Saṅgha... (as before) ... and he dwells in the house with a mind free from the stain of stinginess, open-handed, pure-handed, delighting in giving, responsive to requests, delighting in the distribution of gifts. These four qualities, householders, endowed with which a noble disciple is a stream-enterer, not subject to falling into states of woe, certain of liberation, bound for enlightenment. "You, householders, are endowed with unwavering faith in the Buddha: 'Indeed, that Blessed One is... (as before) ... teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One.' In the Dhamma... (as before) ... in the Saṅgha... (as before) ... and whatever gift there is in the family, all of it is shared with the virtuous, those of good conduct. What do you think, householders, how many people in Kosala are equal to you in the distribution of gifts?" "It is our gain, venerable sir, it is well gained by us, venerable sir! That the Blessed One knows us thus!" The Sixth. 7. The Veḷudvāreyya Sutta 1003. Thus have I heard: At one time the B The Blessed One, wandering on tour in Kosala,
