The Connected Discourses on Powers 1. The Ganges Repetition Chapter 1-12. The Twelve Discourses Beginning with Powers 705-716. “Monks, there are these five powers. Which five? The power of faith, the power of energy, the power of mindfulness, the power of concentration, the power of wisdom – these, monks, are the five powers. Just as, monks, the river Ganges flows eastward, inclines eastward, slopes eastward; even so, monks, a bhikkhu developing these five powers, making much of these five powers, inclines towards Nibbāna, slopes towards Nibbāna, gravitates towards Nibbāna. And how, monks, does a bhikkhu developing these five powers, making much of these five powers, incline towards Nibbāna, slope towards Nibbāna, gravitate towards Nibbāna? Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops the power of faith based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment; the power of energy... the power of mindfulness... the power of concentration... develops the power of wisdom based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Thus, monks, a bhikkhu developing these five powers, making much of these five powers, inclines towards Nibbāna, slopes towards Nibbāna, gravitates towards Nibbāna.” The twelfth. The Ganges Repetition Chapter, the first. Its summary – Six inclining eastward, Six inclining to the ocean; These two sixes make twelve, By that, the chapter is called. 2. The Chapter on Diligence The Chapter on Diligence is to be elaborated. Its summary – The Tathāgata, the path, the peak, The root, with essence, the rainy season; The king, the moon and sun, With cloth, the tenth item. The Chapter on Things to be Done with Power is to be elaborated. Its summary – Power, and seed, and elephant, Tree, with pot, with ear of grain; And by sky, two clouds, Ship, visitor, river. The Chapter on Searches is to be elaborated. Its summary – Searches, modes, influxes, And becoming, three kinds of suffering; Fallow, and stain, and affliction, Feeling, craving, thirst. 5. The Chapter on Floods 1-10. The Group of Ten Discourses Beginning with Floods 749-758. “Monks, there are these five higher fetters... fetters. What are the five? Lust for form, lust for the formless, conceit, restlessness, ignorance – these, monks, are the five upper fetters. For the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, and abandonment of these five upper fetters, five powers are to be developed. What are the five? Here, monks, a monk develops the power of faith, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment; the power of energy… the power of mindfulness… the power of concentration… the power of wisdom, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. For the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, and abandonment of these five upper fetters, these five powers are to be developed.” (Thus it should be elaborated.) The Tenth. The Chapter on Floods, the Fifth. Its summary – Flood, yoke, clinging, knots, and latent tendencies; Sense pleasures, hindrances, aggregates, lower and upper fetters. 6. The Chapter on the Ganges Repetition 1-12. The Twelve Discourses on the Eastward Flow “Just as, monks, the river Ganges flows eastward, inclines eastward, slopes eastward; even so, monks, a monk developing the five powers, cultivating the five powers, inclines towards Nibbāna, slopes towards Nibbāna, gravitates towards Nibbāna. And how, monks, does a monk developing the five powers, cultivating the five powers, incline towards Nibbāna, slope towards Nibbāna, gravitate towards Nibbāna? Here, monks, a monk develops the power of faith, culminating in the removal of lust, culminating in the removal of hatred, culminating in the removal of delusion… …even so, monks, a monk developing the five powers, cultivating the five powers, inclines towards Nibbāna, slopes towards Nibbāna, gravitates towards Nibbāna.” (It should be elaborated.) The Twelfth. The Chapter on the Ganges Repetition, the Sixth. Its summary – Six flow eastward, six flow to the ocean; These two sixes make twelve, the chapter. Thus it is said. The chapter on the powers of heedfulness and things to be done should be elaborated. 9. The Chapter on Searches 1-12. The twelve suttas beginning with 'Search' 792-802. Thus, the Pāli text on search should be elaborated – ending in the removal of lust, ending in the removal of hatred, ending in the removal of delusion. The Chapter on Searches, the ninth. Its summary – Search, modes, influxes, and becoming, the three kinds of suffering; Barrenness, and stains, and affliction, feeling, craving, and thirst. 10. The Chapter on Floods 1-10. The ten suttas beginning with 'Flood' 803-812. ‘‘Monks, there are these five higher fetters. Which five? Lust for form, lust for the formless, conceit, restlessness, ignorance – Monks, these are the five higher fetters. Monks, for the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, and abandonment of these five higher fetters, five powers should be developed. Which five? Here, monks, a monk develops the power of faith… …develops the power of wisdom, ending in the removal of lust, ending in the removal of hatred, ending in the removal of delusion. Monks, for the direct knowledge, full understanding, utter destruction, and abandonment of these five higher fetters, these five powers should be developed.’’ The tenth.
