The Ten Discourses beginning with the Higher Fetters 461-470. "These five, monks, are the higher fetters. Which five? Attachment to form, attachment to the formless, conceit, restlessness, ignorance – these, monks, are the five higher fetters. Of these five higher fetters, monks... For the direct knowledge, full understanding, exhaustion, and abandoning of the fetters, the four establishments of mindfulness should be developed. "Which are the four? Here, monks, a monk dwells observing the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure in the world; in feelings... (etc.)... in mind... (etc.)... in phenomena, observing phenomena, he dwells ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure in the world. Indeed, monks, for the direct knowledge, full understanding, exhaustion, and abandoning of these five upper fetters, these four establishments of mindfulness should be developed."
