2. Connected Discourses on the Factors of Awakening 1. The Chapter on Mountains 1. Discourse on the Himalayas 182. At Sāvatthī. “Just as, bhikkhus, relying on the Himālaya, the king of mountains, elephants grow in body, gain strength; having grown in body and gained strength there, they descend into small ravines, having descended into small ravines, they descend into large ravines, having descended into large ravines, they descend into small rivers, having descended into small rivers, they descend into great rivers, having descended into great rivers, they descend into the great ocean; there they attain greatness and vastness in body; just so, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the seven factors of awakening, making the seven factors of awakening abundant, attains greatness and vastness in the Dhamma. And how, bhikkhus, does a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the seven factors of awakening, making the seven factors of awakening abundant, attain greatness and vastness in the Dhamma? Here, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu develops the factor of awakening of mindfulness, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment; he develops the factor of awakening of investigation of states... he develops the factor of awakening of energy... he develops the factor of awakening of rapture... he develops the factor of awakening of tranquility... he develops the factor of awakening of concentration... he develops the factor of awakening of equanimity, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Thus, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, relying on virtue, established in virtue, developing the seven factors of awakening, making the seven factors of awakening abundant, attains greatness and vastness in the Dhamma.” The First. 2.
